[For sale] [Interest Check] Alucase for Phantom and Filco

Got a request from BiNiaRiS about that.
That is easy to fix, just remove the command in the CNC :)

Might also ad Winkeyless. But don't count on it!

Won't winkeyless fit in the same one as the standard TKL one since the plate and everything is the same

It would fit, of course. But I think that to make it look right you'd need the upper shell to fill the blank area.

If you run Windows, you will want to have the Windows keys on your keyboard for Windows 8. You get a lot of Windows Key + some other key shortcuts.

Maybe you'll want the key, but not the Windows logo keycap. Eurgh. :/

i still won't want it. i can setup any hotkeys i want in autohotkey anyways. i prefer the look of winkeyless boards. they look much cleaner.

the winkeyless boards are 86 keys so theres a 1x key there in between the 2 1.5x modifiers so there wouldnt be a blank space >_>

Or are we actually talking about a 84 keys keyboard

I was thinking about the μTron style, where the LED are hidden when not lit. Nice minimalistic style. I wonder if that's possible with alu. It should be really thin there.

It's probably possible, but not with a normal CNC machine. Apple do a similar thing on their notebooks with the front led. They machine very small holes into the case which are relatively hard to notice when the LED isn't on.

Apple actually uses a laser drilling process to create the microscopic holes that allow the battery lights and sleep indicator light to shine through the aluminum. They use it to create the speaker grill as well, but obviously those are visible (that was actually difficult to do with lasers because the hole was so big). I'm not sure how easy it would be to find someone to do laser drilling for two LED lights on this case, but it sure would look awesome...the next challenge would be finding LEDs that you could mount underneath the top case...

In case you want to read more about how they make the Unibody shell, here's a document explaining the process.

if a keyboard has a windows key, it's not winkeyless. so if it has 86 keys then it's winkey.

winkeyless is completely without winkeys.

What if that little 1x space is used to map a different, non-Winkey button? Still Winkeyless ;)

by default, it's a windows key so it'd be winkey'd.

Making those stealth holes for the LED is not possible. Either you will have to have the holes or not.

And the price will most defenetly go down. But all the way to $150 is unlikely, will try to get close!

As for the Filco case, couldn't it be possible to make the top shell only? In that case price should drop by half, and then you don't have problems with legs and stuff.

Since you said the LED holes is just a matter of removing the line of code off the CNC, I'm guessing it's not too much of a problem for that?

No problem to remove the holes. But making "stealth" holes like the Macbook has is impossible for me to make.
Like gimpster pointed out Apple uses many tiny holes made by laser to make the stealth effect happen.

I can make every topcover a winkeyless from the Watercutter, then I'll just cut them off when needed :)

Edit:
Made a quick render of a winkeyless and LEDless topcover. This also has the correct spacing from Litster.
Image
Below where the LED are supposed to be you can see the cutouts on the mountingplate.
This is due to the holes actually being bigger (7.62) than the width of the Bar.(7.5)
You won't see this with keycaps on the board.

Does it use the Phantom plate as a centerpiece?

Will the color be lighter than this?

I may be interested in a 7bit case without LEDs.

I'd also like to see both sides of all the parts, perhaps you could upload the model?

They can be made so small because they were cut with lasers, not machined.

I remembered reading something about the process a long time ago and was just recalling that it was some kind of different machine. Guess I got it wrong. :) Thanks for correcting me.

Thanks for the information.
There's no need to repeat something someone else already said though, a bit redundant.

I put the price rather high since I was expecting to sell like 10 cases at the most. But at this rate it should be quite a bit more than that. And since Geekhack is down for the moment due to clickclacks sale I've yet to see the US response to it ;)

You mean less, right? It should be cheaper to produce 50 than to produce 30...

On my first read through I got the same meaning as you out of it but that didn't make sense to me either.

As I understand it he meant that it 'should be quite a bit more than that' with regards to 'sell like 10 cases at the most' not with regards to the price. So there's a lot more interest and so many more cases will be ordered, which should make the price go down considerably.

I meant that I was thinking I would make 10 cases at the most.
And the 170euro tag was set with that in mind.

As it is now, the price should be at about 150 euro :)
