[For sale] [closed] Spacesaver Mod-Compaq/Cherry MX 11800 to Tenkeyless

End of April I had a spare weekend, and having an eviscerated MX 11800 lying around I thought about doing something useful with it. This is one from ebay I harvested the Browns, keycaps and cable off, so it was just the shell and PCB.

I decided to do a tenkeyless mod, a quick and dirty one, just for the sake of doing it. It turned out quite well (methinks) and since I don't have any need for it, I'll auction it here - maybe someone does.

What you'll get:
- 11800 Spacesaver Shellmod, cut, epoxy'd, sanded, ready for painting.
- 11800 PCB mod to fit the case, replaced browns with blacks, cut, 2 jumper wires, fully functional, 85 keys, no winkeys ofc.
- 2 PS/2 cables, modded with braided fiber (one ~1,6m from a cherry 1800, one ~1,2m generic, with different braid pattern).
- a spare mat of foam rubber, self addhesive, self cut, I use this as feet (bettter than rubber imo)
- the one remaing case screw :P (of the 11) whose socket couldn't be maintained (lower rigth corner)
- no keycaps. However since most of the keycaps of any ISO G80-3k 102 keys will fit physically (apart from the right shift one, which requires a 2.0 unit) I'll throw in an 85key set of:
MX1800 thin PBT keycaps in bright white, not really fitting, Ctrl, Alt, Space are too small, but the right shift (1.75) will fit (unstabilized) to a 102 Keyset. The del, end, page down, roll row might be needed to fit the rows shape/height.
This is all Frankenstein, so consider it a bonus to a capless board.

Without further ado, this is what it looks like with a (non included) set of 102 key double shots...:

Case has now the size of 33,5cm length x 19,3cm depth. The adjustable height is lost ofc.

just for the buyer and reference: wiring of generic PS/2 cable that has no socket, just single plugs (fits not well but works)

Things I'ld like to mention:
- This is a quick hack, it works, is solid as OEM, flush surface, corners and fitting, all cuts filled, but it is imo (!) not "the best you can do", or at least not the best I can do... The top right corner bothers me most, its not perfectly in line see pics :x
- This Mod was designed to be painted, meaning: upside is sanded with 180 paper, bottom and sides with 120. May have some 120 roughness on side and bottom, designed to be plastic primed, fillered, coloured. Therefore its a fine surface on top, no more cherry OEM goosebumps/roughness.
- case is washed, PBTs @ 40°C, but I'm a smoker. self-indictment here. In case you're sensual you might want to rewash. :)

Are you aware you linked to the date and time of the end of my auction?

Nice mod, anyway. A shame I'm into big battleships.

just a friendly reminder that the auction ends in ~24 hours.

and to make this less of a bump and more of an update here's a comparison with some other boards:
left is a cherry 1800, the compaq spacesaver is ~1,5cm more in depth but just a tad less than a regular G80-3000 (on the right). Significantly less wide than the g80-1502 on top, but also ~6,5cm smaller than the Raptor K1/cherry 1800 below.
The difference in width to a G80-1502/ 3k tenkeyless mod would be ~5cm/ ~4cm.

seriously noone interested ? :? What's the deal - just battleship lovers here ? :o

I've no idea why people are not all over this, my personal reason is I'm trying to do this type of thing myself at the moment. Really is a great job you've done on it.

just do it :!:
simply takes some time and a good epoxy. I now recommend a medium to fast drying one - the 12hrs variant I used is responsible for that little offness in the upper right. The more time one invests the better the outcome.
Also: thanks. :)

ah well, I don't have the fancy stuff, just the ordinary cherry keys - in the shiny and worn edition...

epoxy, that's 2K ("two C"omponents -glue and hardener) stuff which is amongst the strongest glues you can buy widely available. After drying it can be worked like normal plastics.
I used UHU brand because it's the most common german brand and because I had it lying around. Guess its available in the UK too. http://www.uhu.com/en/products/2-compon ... sives.html

The green one (I used) is the strongest, but takes 12 hrs to dry. The red one is the fastest - 2 minutes workable, 5 Minutes to final strength (although I'ld recommend to let it dry overnight). I'ld use the blue one which is inbetween, 5 Minutes workable, 20 mins to final strength.
all of them are mixed 1:1 and you'll probably need half of the box 15g in total, 7,5g of each.

Yes UHU is available in the UK. In fact it was a favoured brand by 80's solvent abusers, used to find glue bags all the time when playing on the old pit heap as a kid.

Thanks for the advice I'll be sure to use the blue when I come to cutting up my wyse case to a tkl. (If I ever finish it)

Will be creating one myself, otherwise I would certainly drop a bid on this!

Just curious, you have leds under those windowed keycaps?

nope, that was just the only 102 keyset I had available at the time of photographing. LEDs on keys would require more rewiring since the boards layout is to have the LEDs on the case.

yeah, bummer. Whatever that's what you get for being to mainstream.
I won't put it on GH because I don't have an account there, and don't plan to create one..
For the moment I'll keep it stored, maybe mod it further, maybe trash it like I planned before modding crossed my mind.
Did it for my fun anyhow so selling wasn't planned firsthand or necessary at all.
I would appreciate if we let that thread sink into eternity, no need to bump something that's over. :)
