Today, the Hyper keyboard group buy has officially started!

All you can order right now is only the HyperMicro prototype PCB, but soon other keyboards will be available, including mount plates.

All items in this group buy will be available when the Hyper keyboards are finished. Prototypes will be shipped ahead.

Congratulations, 7bit. It's a… keyboard!

Nice parts list. You're going to be the one-stop-shop for these. Those clicky Matias are looking pretty scarce now. Not even enough to make a HyperMicro!

Actually, you might want to sell bundles so people don't have to ask all the same questions. Instead they can just choose layout and switch flavour.

That would be awesome, im sure some people want to pick and choose each piece, but the option to get a bundle is always appreciated.

with the teensy in that position you get a case height of at least 17-18mm which is a bit uncomfortable imho... unless you make a hole in the bottom plate

How much higher up should the controller go?

It is already in the top row!

For sure there will be mount plates!
I'm still working on a script to generate them.
First step, the cutouts for switches and stabilisers, is already done.

BTW:
The JD40 has it in the bottom row, so stop complaining.

doesn't the JD40 have the controller under the spacebar? and btw I may argue that the JD40 has no case

Or put the teensy on top with a cutout in the top plate.
I can visualize a keyboard with a muscle car theme. With little air vents on the teensy.

Overlapping switches with the controller works quite well. Here's PJE's OneHand where it's bang in the middle:

The trouble with slapping Teensies under space bars is that you get a chunky front edge and an egregiously oversized space bar. Avoid!

On the JD40 the controller is on the back, like it is on the HyperMicro.
On the JD40 the controller is a tiny fraction closer to the PCB, because there are no soldering pads from switches, because the JD40 is lame in the way that it has no additional switch positions in the bottom row.
On the JD40 the controller is in the bottom row, while on the HyperMicro it is in the top row.
The HyperMicro can be deeper at front and at the rear is only little higher than the JD40 is at it's front.

Inside part of a cherry MX: 5.0mm
PCB: 1.6mm
cherry MX pins: 3.3mm (-1.6)
Teensy headers: 2.0mm (?????)
Teensy: 5.6mm

Total room needed inside the keyboard: 15.9mm

Top plate: 1.5mm (not counted)
Bottom plate: 1.5mm

Total keyboard height: 17.4mm (and you have zero margin)

Edit: oh right the header goes over the pins. so it's a tad less, but still pretty tall. I'm telling this because one of my custom (Bianca) had this problem.

According to Cherry, they are 3.3mm down into the PCB and the PCB 1.5 to 1.6mm, so they poke out at the underside by 1.8mm in the worst case.

I'm too lazy to look up the measures of the header pins and teensy. So if the teensy is 5.6mm heigh, the keyboard extends 9.2mm downwards, measured from the bottom of the PCB. This gives an angle of about 9 degrees.*

yes, a sloped case would work, but harder to make (ie: no laser cut, at least no standard layered laser cut).

PS: I believe teensy header is > than 2mm actually, it's probably closer to 4mm

Why not flush mount the teensy ala Phantom? With carefull leg trimming and a bit of kapton tape it should be no problem!

you should sacrifice a switch and place it flush on the PCB (better on top under a spacebar... yeah I know, I know)

Standard plastic headers do a pretty good job making the Teensy ride right under switches, I need to take some pictures but as I remember from construction, my OneHand's depth isn't too bad without much wasted space.

Besides, we can make stepped cases, even when working entirely within laser cuts…

Pretty sure we could pull off a shallower angle with different case designs. Especially ones which aren't 100% laser cut steel!

If you can't give up a switch you can still make a hole for the teensy on the bottom plate (I seem to recall the onehand does something like that), or find a way to raise the back of the case. A 17-18mm tall keyboard (on the front) is rather uncomfortable (for me at least).

What makes you think it is raised on the front when the Teensy is at the rear?

Usually laser cut keyboards are "flat". I have no idea what's your intention with the case. So, what's your intention with the case?
