nothing new here this keyboard is in our wiki and I´m sure it has been covered here at some point. This has been sitting in my basement since I bought it this year with in a mini group buy with halvar and andrewjoy. I have some time now so I decided to take a look inside. Obviously this has been used in a commercial setting, the sticker on the bottom case reads "WGZ Düsseldorf" which is a bank.I´m not sure if that is corrosion on the plate or what it is and how to deal with it.Oddly the pcb looks fine.I tried saving the mat, no chance. I will have to make a replacement. I love the fact that the terminal manual comes with the keyboard and has it´s own compartment. A small sticker on the inside of the 3178 Keyboard WSE Maintenance Information. The overall feel of this Model F is more AT than XT.

I don't know what it is either, but it looks like a similar kind of corrosion to what we had on the beam spring keyboards from the same seller. I haven't opened my F boards from this seller that you proxied to me yet, but I'm not surprised.

this is a situation where household cleaning utensils will not get the job done. Time for Mr sandpaper to join the project:

Yeah thanks for the tipp. I went the manual way on the plate, quite a tough job sanding this by hand! I think I'll go the chemical way with the barrel.

Yup, don't scratch it up much! I used Hammerite Rust Remover Gel to tackle my beamspring from this guy. It's powerful, and will eat through plastic so watch out with that too. You don't need very much of it though, and it's way less work than getting busy with scratchy stuff. You can leave that to wherever gel or vinegar is too risky to use.

so I got the barrel looking somewhat clean. I soaked in vinegar and did a little sanding. I´ve been reading the Replacement Foam Mat for IBM Model F Keyboards? thread since I need to cut a replacement mat or try those o-rings, which I find an quite interesting option.

Sorry, got a bit too excited at the thought of using o-rings as a foam mat replacement for a model F, so I didn't quite read your post carefully enough!

right I might ask them how it works before buying some. Cutting a mat should not be that difficult, more so choosing the right material and the correct thickness of the foam.
Another thing I just noticed now: no feet on this keyboard! Look at my picture of the bottom case. There are some holes in that area where the feet would be.

This keyboard has a huge controller board! The blue switch would be useful if you wanted to have a piezo clicker and wanted to use it as a on/off switch.
I also found this incase someone wants this keyboard:

Yes the controller is big on this one. I'm still looking for the right foam for a mat.

From what I've heard, the blue switch initiates a quieter click. Is that true, or am I thinking of another keyboard?

Since I've never had mine in operation I can't tell you but as you can see in my picture there are letters next to the switch, so it could be a upper lower case function.Firebolt1914 wrote:From what I've heard, the blue switch initiates a quieter click. On another note look how nice the IBM badge is on this one. Redmaus where are you?[emoji6]

It is. Flip the switch, and the display goes all caps. It's not a caps lock in the ordinary sense but something deserving a big blue switch away from the keyboard!seebart wrote: ↑so it could be a upper lower case function.
As for boards that change their volume by a switch, Firebolt, perhaps you're thinking of solenoids or beepers? I'm all but certain there are no dyncamically configurable switch mechanisms in old boards, so instead such matters were about adding extra sound rather than removing it.

That's the one inch badge. For super close ups like that my nexus 5 camera is actually not too bad.

That is a really nice picture, especially for just a phone camera.seebart wrote: ↑That's the one inch badge. For super close ups like that my nexus 5 camera is actually not too bad.
I have some pictures, taken from a model M 122 key bolt mod that I am working on. Should I start a separate thread? or just share them here?

Those feet, I have them here. The foam looks like what is in the old Selectric typewriter. It is like the foam used in aquarium tanks as filter material; not quite as dense as the sound proofing foam.

Here is a pic I liked from the back a Model M 122 key Membrane plate
Here is a close up of the membrane
Neat Logo Close Up
I only edited the light settings on the membrane image, the rest I left alone only to resize in order to be able to upload.
I have a lot of neat model M hammer pictures too, if anyone wants to see those.

Yes, I had the same thought when I saw this. On the other hand, let's not get into the business of celebrating membranes, the cheapos of the keyboard world!
