xbindkeys is not needed if the only thing you want to achieve is getting the eurosign. You should edit xorg.conf (as I have written above) or use setxkbmap if you want a runtime solution.

Anyway, try to get familiar with XKB config and ask if you need more information:

You can bind eurosign to (for example) Alt+5 by adding the following line to the keyboard-relevant InputClass section of xorg.conf.

As a devoted ThinkPad fan I am terrified. Look how they removed the numpad markings (provided the lack of NumLock maybe the numpad as a whole), how they inverted the funcion of F-keys or changed the layout of Home/End/PgUP/PgDn... Also my personal opinion is that it looks much much worse.

Looks like a perfect replacement for the overbranded CM QF case.
