Hey, a little late to the party, but...

Anyway I was thinking about the possibilities of the teensy/ardunio board, and what I could do with the ability to intercept the keypresses before sending them to the pc.

You could borrow some ideas (or code!) from Hasu's HH mod - notably, he makes some ...

That's not a chiclet keyboard, this is a chiclet keyboard :)

(Till some joker makes one out of actual Chiclets.)

As a former ThinkPad user, I don't mind the change of key shapes too much. Moving Home/End away from PgUp/PgDn is kind of stupid. But at least they're still pressable with one hand ...

Not that I'm likely to get you anything useful, but out of curiosity, if you have a minute:
- What's that keyboard on your desk, and what's the case made of?
- What's your screen background when it's not covered by Chrome?
- Is your monitor bezel white or grey? Can't see from the pic.

Ok, so I tried to order a handful from that cheap neworldit site from upthread, just to see if it would work. Because their website let me do it in increments of 1, not 250. I expected to get an "oops, website blooper, actually we sell in units of 250".

Instead, I got:

I can see how it can be pretty cool to have dynamic key legends, for a bunch of purposes that aren't touch-typing.
It would be very reasonable to buy something like that, if it existed at 10% of the current price.

The guy's explanation sounds weird. I don't think you can magnetize copper like that, I think the magnet is just inducing current in the tube (not lengthwise but going in double-circles just above and below where the magnet is, and at the edges of the "window") and this current produces an EMF ...

What he said. The easiest option may be to get a set of stickers to put over your US keys.

Even then, you will not have the one extra key between left shift and American-Z, which is inconsequential on some European layouts and sort of important on others.

Think about the cheapest one in the market.

You could spend USD 5.- or less. It works anyway. Fine.
But, If you think about money you spent and feelings you get from the board. It is a crap.

Next, about the best one in the globe.

You could spend USD 500.- or more. It works perfectly. Fine.

Don't trust Wikipedia too literally. Those "Country X layouts" are mostly just "what Microsoft decided, reasonably or not, to ship as a layout with Windows or MS-DOS" and not "what is some kind of an official standard there". And sometimes they smoke very funny things at Microsoft.

Actually, the ...

So these guys carefully choose a PCB base material of the right thickness and elasticity so it would be optimal, not for keyboards in general, but specifically for Cherry linear switches?

Chop up a nice hot chili pepper. Boil in a little water. Drain. Instant pet-repelling potion, if a little harsh.

Rub a bit of it on the cable, but avoid the parts that you might touch in regular use. She'll probably bite that cable one more time and decide to move on to tastier things.

The ANSI layout has the \| key above enter and below back space, so that would just be question of adapting to the different mapping (some programmers say they prefer this)

I'd really suggest reading up on what causes these problems in general. Being more aware of the problematic positions and movements already helps. Holding the same old mouse in a smarter way may be as effective as getting a better mouse.

In my language's layout the extra key at bottom left is kind of optional, so I use it easily with physically-ANSI keyboards when I need to.

I guess it sucks if your layout needs that key for the backslash (and pipe, if you do any command-line stuff) and you're forced to use an ANSI keyboard. But ...
