Announcement of server move, Sunday 20 October 12:00 UTC

Deskthority will move to a new server on Sunday, October 20th, at approximately 12:00 UTC.

The website at our current host will be put into read-only mode and show a notice, after which a last backup will be synchronized with the new server at hetzner.de. I will then redirect the DNS to the new server. During this time and while the new DNS settings are propagated, the site at the new host will not be available. There may also be e-mail delivery problems concerning mail sent by deskthority.

EDIT: There is no switch to simply put phpBB in read-only mode, the website at the old host might show a message instead and nothing else, or just show a message that everything that is posted later than the last backup which is being moved, will be lost.

EDIT: The switch has been completed. Please report any problems here.

Q: Oh no I can't login!
A: Send a mail to i n f o <at> d e s k t h o r i t y <dot> n e t or use IRC to contact me.

What are you going to change the TTL to the day before? Set it to 5 minutes and you'd have at most 5 minutes' downtime for everyone whose ISP has working DNS servers. "Propagation" is a myth. (Though different registrars have different requirements — eNom appear to mandate 1 hour TTL, no more, no less, while some systems require 24 hours. Others don't care what you set it to.)

I will set it to very little, although certain ISP will just ignore that.

P.S. If you're using deskthority.com or deskthority.org in urls for some reason (these redirect to deskthority.net), be aware that these will be moved first for testing purposes.

I'll announce the new ip in the service notice on the old site, so people can temporarily fix their local dns client if needed.

Deskthority at the new server may be tested here:
http://deskthority.com/
User & password: dt
Feel free to log in and try some stuff.
It uses a copy of the database, so you can vandalize the content without consequence.

Daniel, can you perhaps test the wiki some more? I've noticed an error here:
http://deskthority.com/wiki/Switch_recognition
But the original at deskthority.net is also not working, only the png version.
Haven't checked fonts yet.

From the original server:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
...
Content-Length: 0
Connection: close
Content-Type: image/svg+xml

Looks like the SVG file is truncated and only the autogenerated PNG files have any content in them.

I'll play around with the test wiki tonight. I can't log into the test forum though: "You have specified an incorrect username. Please check your username and try again. If you continue to have problems please contact the Board Administrator."

Btw shouldn't there be better notice for this? It's bit hidden in here. And it's in two days...

Just so that people won't wonder two much if they miss this info...

You are blocked to make sure you only take care of the wiki and not waste your time with testing the new server.
:evilgeek:

BTW, e-mail notifications work, which is the most important thing for me.

It seems to be notably faster to me on the new server :)

I have a 135ms lower ping to the new server (55 instead of 190 on average)! It feels so much better

I've worked it out. dt/dt is the HTTP realm login — I clicked the wiki link first, and got the realm login, and never tried logging into the wiki itself (I guess I'm used to IIS having both forms (HTML) and realm-based (HTTP) logins). I didn't realise the realm was for the whole domain, and tried to log into the forum as dt/dt, misunderstanding webwit to mean that he'd set up a single test user on the forum.

For me, it is 48 instead of 144.

20ms instead of 152ms it is for me.

I'm obviously closer to Texas, but farer away to Bavaria than you.

127ms instead of 49ms in the US. Still very useable and better considering the community.

For some reason, the migration has rebuilt all the PNGs from the SVGs. The default font is essentially what I was expecting to see all along:

http://deskthority.com/wiki/File:Force_ ... _Black.svg
http://deskthority.net/wiki/File:Force_ ... _Black.svg

Hasn't fixed the rsvg bugs though — still missing "Row 2" on the ghosting and NKRO diagrams:

http://deskthority.com/wiki/Rollover,_b ... d_ghosting

I've fixed the missing SVG on the live wiki, too.

I cleaned the wiki cache, this is possibly why the png were rebuilt.
