A dealer in California just posted this want list to a group (subscription) I belong to. Please note that not all the PN listed are actual keyboards; sometimes they are a kit that contained a keyboard. Anyways, it is a starting point for more collectible PN. He is looking to buy, not sell.

I wonder if he grabbed that old list that had every P/N that Unicomp claimed to be able to repair/replace.

I noticed some of the terminal models are not there, like 1395660.

Rather difficult for a regular dealer to compile such an odd list, I think. Some of those are rather obscure additions, which definitely makes me suspect that they're looking for them on behalf of a collector or are a collector themselves.

Agree with the previous speakers. If the dealer has any 4707s, get them!

Also, 1387033! I would love one of those!

I compiled this list - one of my contacts circulated it a few days ago to one of the dealer networks to look for these on my behalf. It is of every "harder to find" model F, M, and beamspring keyboard (no regular 101 key M's).

Usually the lists are fruitless in my experience because the recyclers that have the scale to catalog their inventory usually sell on eBay or they discarded these parts as unsold years ago. Including 2 APL unsavers that were trashed around a year ago by one of my contacts. That same contact also tossed a 66 key beamspring before I could get to it :(

Another guy said his company tossed over 100 beamsprings with terminal screens because no one wanted the lot.

If I understand correctly, you actively look for rare boards, recondition them, and then sell them with a mark-up for the work and material you’ve invested in the process.

Isn’t that precisely what is called a "business"?

+1.

I'm not sure whether Ellipse necessarily always reconditions the rare boards that he finds, however.

Sorry, you do not understand. I sell my collection based on the current market value (i.e., what others pay for it), not based on my time, "mark-up" or other business concepts. Everyone already debated my keyboard selling practices in a few threads. Take a look at one over on GH: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=68047.0 I have little more to say beyond the many users over there who stuck up for my pricing and tactics against a few vocal contributors who have the general viewpoint that all members of any forum must sell something for close to what they paid for it or else they are accused of being "unfair."

Whether or not it is "fair" to do so, it's not like that on many other hobbyist forums. Camera equipment forum members, for example, check and closely mirror eBay prices (often with a ~10% discount since there are no eBay fees) for both rare, expensive equipment and regular equipment, at least on the major sites. No one complains it's not "fair."

Heard any baseball card collectors say "I bought that Mickey Mantle card for $1 in 1952 - I will sell it for $1 because it is not right to profit selling collectible baseball cards"? Didn't think so. Rare keyboards are collectible too and are valued highly.

Why not focus on the thread topic instead of trying to attack me. I am relaying my experience collecting keyboards - I advertised nothing of mine for sale in my earlier post.

I will say again, I will not be bullied by a few of you into selling off part of my collection only if you deem the price "fair."

Going back on topic, have I missed any part numbers on the above list? I already see I forgot 6019303, the number for my F77s. That part number, like many on the above list, come up on many company web sites and aggregate lists but none of them have any real stock, in my experience. Judging by some of the descriptions being worded and punctuated the exact same way, I think they often copy each other's lists and do not update them when things sell out. The lists are probably 10 or more years old in many cases.

Long post having almost nothing to do with what I wrote.
Of course I don't object to you selling stuff for whatever price,
nor do I think profit should be banned in sales between forum members,
nor do I see anything reprehensible in selling one's collection based on market value.

The point I had made was completely different.
The part of my post you ignored was (emphasis now added, perhaps it helps):
kbdfr wrote: […] If I understand correctly, you actively look for rare boards, recondition them, and then sell them with a mark-up for the work and material you’ve invested in the process.

You now write:
Ellipse wrote: […] I sell my collection based on the current market value […], not based on my time, "mark-up" or other business concepts. […]
This rather differs from what you wrote on a previous occasion:
Ellipse wrote: Given that […] I have put in many hours of piece by piece restoration I think it is more than fair to ask for a premium to something that was just found and posted on eBay as is. […]
Again, I have nothing against selling stuff at market prices.
But if the difference between your selling price and what you yourself paid is a retribution for the work/material you invested in processing stuff bought with the intention of then reselling it, then it is a business. The more so if you buy low and sell high without even processing, which of course nobody knows.

--------------------

Now back to topic, as you said

Nice list. It would have made a nice thread subject or wiki article, and others could then have contributed to it.
But you chose another route:
Ellipse wrote: I compiled this list - one of my contacts circulated it a few days ago to one of the dealer networks to look for these on my behalf. […]

quotes from GH:
I wonder how much he paid for that from Cindy (elecplus) at Deskthority? All this guy does is flip for profit...

His username here is Ellipse.
If they bought it from Cindy at a reasonable price and then are immediately flipping it (as JD stated), then it is unreasonable and they're an *******.
Agreed, I very much doubt this guy pay $2K for this board so he's pretty much just an opportunistic *******.
As far as I know he has an ecycler from which he's getting all of these at an indeterminable price, and it's most likely not from elecplus. Meh, he can charge whatever he wants for unobtainium I suppose.
I look very sadly on this debacle. Once again, someone is exploiting us geeks.

I warned early on about Ellipse. He isn’t really a member of the community. Right from the start he was pretty open and shameless about his intentions – he basically joined geekhack to make money off us.

Let’s put things this way. Ezrahilyer and Orihalcon also make money from us. But they are also genuinely interested in what they do, they contribute to modding discussions, they try to do things for the community, they engage us in normal conversations without dollar signs in their eyes. They’re like the small businessmen and craftsmen who live within the community that they do business with.

Ellipse is nothing like that.

The problem is that many geeks have no self control and too much money. It must be those $500000 a year programming jobs?

The best way to deal with this guy is not to engage him. I have no intention of ever buying anything from him.
