A friend of mine is in Shanghai and he is asking me if there's anything I'm interested in. Any cool keyboard shop there that you are aware of? :)

I was recently in Shanghai, and spent a whole day looking for mechanical keyboards at the various computer malls. It wasn't a good experience. You get pestered the moment you enter a mall by various salespeople, and they don't stop. So I tried the main computer malls, one of which was called 太平洋数码广场一期 ‎. Right down the road from it is a building with a similar name, a part two if you will.

Ok, so you'll find Razer everywhere, as well as a few China boards that are very flashy looking but rubber domes. For the good stuff like Keycool and Noppoo, I found one shop which was well stocked in the abovementioned mall. I can't remember which level it is, but I found it tucked away in one of the tiny lanes. I'm sorry I can't be more specific. In any case, the price quoted for the boards I asked were about 430RMB for a Noppoo 87 with black switches I believe. Brown and Red are priced higher in China.

If you ask me, unless you know a local who is into the keyboard scene, and can show you around, forget about the malls. You should go on a Taobao spree though. Once again, you'll need a local's help, but at least you will be able to see the products online clearly and tell them what to order. They won't need to know about the keyboards themselves. You can get a Keycool 87 for as low as 350RMB, going up to about 400RMB if you want Reds or Browns.

I hope that wasn't too negative sounding. Maybe someone here with better knowledge of Shanghai can shed more light.
