Rubber domes are typically used as a cheap alternative to helical steel return springs. While most rubber dome keyboards use membranes as the contact mechanism, there are switches with domes but no membranes, and the two terms should not be conflated. See under membrane switches for switches that use a membrane contact mechanism regardless of whether they use rubber domes for springs.
