Are you reaching under the key with a small flat screwdriver to set the wire in place?

Just a suggestion, I have never had that keyboard.

It seems you need to remove some alpha keys first?

yep. remove the alphas around it first.
After that, I'd present the space bar keycap to the switch stem but not press it down all the way.
Use a small flat screwdriver to press on the stabilizers in their slots,
finish pressing down the keycap into it's stem and done.
