Hyper 7 IRL...

So after seeing the H7 kit of keycaps for sale last summer, I bought them off 7Bit with no intention other than to use them to look pretty, however, after a chat with some other friends from the UK, we actually decided to give making this a go....

Yiancar was our PCB man - and although we did cock up, not realising 3 rows should be on the daughterboard, we got through development. This is actually PCB 2 that you see here - no1 is going to get framed I think for my office wall.

The plate is steel, and custom made through Laser Master, the switches are MX Outemu ICE Greys, and the case was handmade from wood, but is only a prototype till I can work out a method of using my small CNC mill to create a multipart alu case. All switches are holtited as well as the number of times I'd need to take the board apart and back together was insane.

All in its taken probably 45 hours of time to get to this stage, with lots of periods of inactivity. One of the largest jobs was porting the PCB into QMK. The hex file now has 9 layers and nearly 8,000 different functions across the board... although I haven't committed them to memory as yet!

Special thanks to:

7Bit, Yiancar, Gimli, Calza, Louison, Harjoat, Duynguyenle, AndyTC, Glue415, Soft, & Xondat (noxary)

For all of their help and support getting this project working and running. There are now plans for a hardwood case and a revised PCB to ensure the correct rows are on each section...

Holly bologna! Mad respect. The inner Vim user in me may say that there are a few too many modifiers though.

Jokes aside, fantastic work. Do be warned that everyone and their dog(s) will have differing ideas about the exact layout to use. :-D

Coolest project of 2018! (and potentially much further back)

Of course we have to credit 7bit for the Hyper 7, but OP (jae-3soteric) is eventually the person who spent more time and effort and juice to put things and brains together to realize this one.

I would definitely contemplate what special functions to put on those dedicated keys with more obscure labels, e.g. functions / actions in photoshop / CAD / Linux shell / Emacs / Vim, in order to make this real cool and functional.

If there is enough interest I might run a small one for the PCBs - although they wont be cheap...

Maybe we should call this one "mothership". :D

Is it actually bigger than a Battleship? It obviously has more keys, but the Battleship is surprisingly big even for a 122-key keyboard.

Whatever it is, though, I want it, it's amazing xD .

That is 3 units / modules combined together, the DIY people can also print or cut some hardware to bind keyboards together and solder their wire somewhat together, a little bit cheating. Who's a giant, and one tied himself up with his chubby brother and said that he is one.

Look at this not yet been unearthed single-unit keyboard: Mother-air-freaking-craft carrier battleship

Given that it's rather long and not that heavy, but nevertheless packs a lot of keys, perhaps the name "monitor" would be more appropriate (after the monitor-class warships of the XIX century — see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_(warship)).

That the term “monitor keyboard” would confuse the uninitiated to no end is a big bonus, too. :D
