Resoldering a Cherry MY board? ( G81-3000 )

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a new keyboard for office use, and i currently have a leopold 750R with mx browns.
The G81-3000 design blends into my working environment quite well, but it uses the MY switch, which according to rumors are just worse MX switches.
I then thought of taking off the MY switches and replace them, However I wonder if such a task is even possible.

Has anyone had luck with them? Please let me know.

If it is indeed possible, what switches would you recommend? I have quite strong fingers.

It is not possible to replace MY switches.

You can however swap a G80 (MX) PCB into that case and effectively turn it into a G80-3000
The most common variant of G80-3000s are MX blacks and they are medium weight linear switches.
Heavier switches are commonly only available in clicks or tactile (MX Green and MX Clear)
There are heavier linear switches by Cherry but they are only used to space bars.

Sad!

Cost would be too high to justify a pcb purchase along with the board itself then.

MX black is my suggestion. Heavier than brown, nicely linear, and widely available. Its also the smoothest of all MX in its vintage form.

Do you have a G81-3000 already? I’d just go for a whole G80-3000 instead. They aren’t the most solid of boards, but they look pretty good and are well behaved out the box.

Here’s mine. With aftermarket PBT Granite caps:

I have yet to purchase the g81-3000, but indeed the case looks not bad. Very sadly i have not seen any g80-3000 at a good price recently.

However I found an g80-1808 at around 60$. Is it worth the jump? They come with mx greens btw

Holy moly that G80-1808 sounds like a great deal!
MX Greens are very hard to find in a keyboard and the 1800 layout is quite popular.
I would get one instantly at that price!
