Re: Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
I've had a reply from Unicomp about the composition of the Model M's barrel frame. They tell me it contains teflon! The barrel frame is unremarkable except that it is infused with teflon. The swirl [...] is common in injection moulded plastics (it is called Splay), but is perhaps more visible due to...

Re: Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
Thank you for the additional info about the silicone replacements from Unicomp, Muirium. They do not appear in their webshop, but perhaps their customer service can help me out. Using the PVAc-glue trick worked more-or-less as intended (no more rubber smell!), yet when I punched holes through the ne...

Re: Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
Thank you for your replies, everyone! Good to know regular rubber was used (and ordinary plastic :-) ). I've been able to reduce the smell using first soda, then vinegar. The smell didn't entirely disappear, though. Currently trying what happens if I add a thin layer of water-based binder's glue. Th...

Re: Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
Thanks for the reply, Wazrach - and happy Christmas!
Here are the photographs that were requested. I've also sent an e-mail to Unicomp - perhaps they can shine a light on the odd smell coming from this old Model M.

Re: Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
Thank you for your replies! I'll take pics later today (after our Christmas breakfast :-) ). I don't think there's a lot to see, though. There's nothing odd to the rubber sheet beyond it smelling bad. A few years ago, I bought another Model M with the intention of bolt modding it. That one smelled e...

Strange, oily smell from rubber (?) sheet inside a Model M
Hey guys, I've been working on bolt modding a 1985 British-made IBM Model M, yet am somewhat worried about two things: - There is a black, rubbery sheet which which lies between the flippers of the Model M's keys and the transparent membrane. I guess it's what allows the membrane to register key pre...

Re: [WTB] IBM Scrollpoint Pro Mouse
I don't know if this is still relevant, but I bought my Scrollpoint Pros from this seller: https://www.ebay.nl/usr/yoshi_en Yoshi_en used to have many; perhaps there is some stock left. Do note that the rubber may be sticky (I think this is due to solvents in the plastic packaging). I have a few of ...

The 1989-91 ones are still very good, though! Cool that you'll be giving others the opportunity to buy one of your boards.

Re: When did you first start appreciating keyboards?
Interesting question! For years, I typed on a Microsoft Internet Keyboard - until I spilled a large mug of coffee over it, and its spirit ascended to keyboard heaven. The Microsoft Internet Keyboard, although a rubberdome, is really quite comfortable to type on, so I thought I'd be OK with a cheap n...

Re: good mouse for CAD work?
I realise that the original post was made a while ago, but if you are still looking for a mouse which makes repeated middle-clicking less frustrating I can recommend IBM's old Scrollpoint Pro mice. A seller on E-Bay still has them in stock, albeit in the ball-mouse variety (new old stock, the rubber...

Re: Adapter to use Model M keycaps on Cherry MX stem?
Thank you for your suggestion!
I think what I might do in the end is get an old Cherry keyboard and harvest its key caps. I will wait a while, though, as it is possible that the keyboard won't materialise.

Adapter to use Model M keycaps on Cherry MX stem?
Has anyone ever made an adapter that allows you to use the top half of a two-part Model M keycap with a Cherry MX stem? I've pre-ordered the Input Club Keystone keyboard on Indiegogo, and while the keycaps that it comes with look nice, I'd prefer to use a spare set of Model M keycaps that I have if ...

Two drawers and space behind one of the cabinets in my office. Not ideal, but it's enough for now (ten keyboards).

Re: Get the PITCHFORK key ready! Microsoft intends to molest the keyboard layouts again.
For business purposes, I was repeatedly offered a Windows phone or laptop or tablet in the past 10 years. Free stuff, IF I did something else such as purchasing X or ordering Y. I never took up a single one of these offers and have no regrets. Free Windows devices usually are of minimal use. Paying...

There should be a label inside the board with more information about the make of Model M. You'll need a somewhat uncommon type of screwdriver, though.
I personally use this one for my Model Ms:

What about an IBM Scrollpoint Pro ( http://www.ibmfiles.com/pages/scrollpoint.htm ) ? It's the first mouse that fits in my rather large* hands and built like an armored rodent that's clicky too. The future of ALL switches is zilch. Nada. Nothing. The near-future is voice , and the not-too-distant-future is thought . But in the here-and-now, the best mechanical switch is old school IBM buckling spring, though if you like artisan keysets, keycaps, customization, color, etc., you should give ...
