I have a northgate omnikey with white alps and it is pretty fantastic. That board might run around 120 usd, but it is one of the best alps chassis you can get. I mean, it doesn't hold a candle to the Model F XT, but I mean, what keyboard does? If you are just looking for a cheap alps board just to g...

Welcome to the Alps brotherhood! ;) If you could recommend brands that use whites, that would be most helpful, so I can get some saved eBay searches rolling. I personally really like the Northgate Omnikey with white alps. Its a fantastic board, very solid. One of the white alps boards I would stay ...

IBM Model M Without Rubber Mat
Hello, I recently did a restoration of a model M, including bolt mod and new springs and hammers. While assembling, I decided to leave out the rubber mat due to reading an old post saying it improved the key feel. I can agree that it does improve the key feel and the sound. So my question is has any...

Dell Quietkey vs Topre
The other day I decided to spend some money and buy something I've always wanted to try, and that was a topre switch tester(55g). Whenever I finally got the switch, I started playing with it and realized I've felt that feeling before. It feels just like my Dell Quietkey (rt7d5jtw) from the mid 90s. ...

Think of it as a sign though. It's some higher power trying to tell you not to use MX brown.

I think I have the same style omnikey, Is that the one with the cross nav instead of the t nav? If so, it definitely comes with SKCM alps, and I have my money on white alps, which are pretty nice. And when you get it, could you test and see if it has n-key rollover? I have heard that all omnikeys co...

I do think that they are hard to compare, since they do feel rather different, plus there are so many different keyboards that have white alps. I am pretty sure that Tandy used a proprietary protocol that is not compatible with anything else. Are the switches good? ummmm not really, it uses a dome over slider design, but its very stiff with a faint click at the bottom as the rubber dome activates. It uses fujitsu peerless switches. It has ...

Hello, I recently picked up a package deal on craigslist(Model F At, Tandy Enhanced 101, and a NTC board with white alps) for $65 usd. Has the OP mentioned yet whether or not compatibility with MX-stemmed keycaps is a requirement in his quest? Because if so, then all this Alps discussion is utterly moot (as is any mention of buckling spring), isn't it. Mx mount isn't a requirement, I'm one of the few people on this site who uses t...

That should work, then we can test if the issue is the keyboard or the USB converter.

Best Tactile Switch?
I'm on a quest to find the best tactile switch. Right now my favorite is mx clears, but it is also the only tactile switch i've tried besides Mx browns and Alps blacks(Two of my least favorite switches). Let me know what your favorite tactile switch is, that way I know what I'm missing.

While there are some differences between the XT and AT components, the mechanism is mostly identical. "Wear" as such isn't a huge factor in Model Fs, but the condition of the foam padding, and dust / muck definitely is. Personally I'm on the opinion that any Model F's today need to be completely di...
