Re: UPDATED: IBM Model F restoration - May 2019

Great work!

And what a rust! I personally would have sprayed an antirust paint first on the plate as a prep to the final paint , but that's a matter of preference.

Thanks for the cross link to my Model F restoration video!!!

Cheers

Hi,

great info. My insulation mat did look completely different (as did the PCB):

Is that mat a new one or just the one that came with your beamspring?

Re: IBM 5251 Beam Spring Restoration

Hi! Great work! And lucky owner !! Do anyone know if the crossed grooves in the lower metal plate have any use? I always ask myself why did IBM bother to make that grooves... Are they functional to the PCB , capacitance or whatever? Luca There is a plastic sheet between the plate and PCB with the s...

Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

I'm using EVA also for my bigfoot/XT project and it gets just the right after some time pressed. Right now I have a new sheet under weigh load so I can work better with it later without clamps or other tools. Hi, if you didn't already, I strongly suggest You to release some spacebar stabilizer tens...

Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

Hi Luca, In the end it was about 2 mm thick. But I fear that information isn't worth much, unless you have foam with the same firmness... Thanks for the information. I'm restoring a Model F "BigFoot" and I used 1 mm thick Eva art foam and It works well after I failed with 3 mm insulation foam. The ...

Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

@matt3o: Oh, thank you. @darkcruiz: Thanks. There is no wobble (at the moment). After cutting around on the foam to make it thinner (by about a good third), I hit the sweet spot: Thin enough to enable a correct assembly, and thick enough to hold the switches properly. Could You Express that in mm ?...

Cool build!
That cable is awesome, I hope you have a matching one for the usb.
I didn't find a matching one, instead, I'm waiting for a black sleeved 90 degr magnetic cable form china.
The Pro Micro micro-usb connector is too weak for normal use. I already broke one.

Re: Anyone in Italy? Go rescue those beams man!

that's for checking that for "us" :) Luca! I was pretty sure of that You're welcome. Italy is a strange country, I bet in some other country the authorities would have welcomed a cleaning effort by privates and for free. The funny part is that I had the phone contacs by a local ecologist group and ...

Re: Anyone in Italy? Go rescue those beams man!

As a follow-up, I report that I contacted local authorities and I also the actual owners of the place: there is no interest in letting anyone enter the site. It's all polluted with asbestos and other chemical agents, nor the place is safe to walk in from the general local building safety rules. I've...

There must be many other similar factories somewhere in Italy or Canada with a lot of beams in good condition waiting to be found and rescued. As far as I know, Canada and Italy had IBM subsidaries in charge of manufacturing Beamsprings. It's very likely that factories bankrupted in the same period...
