Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread

No label on the back https://imgur.com/dycmtQg Luggable PC, lots of variations in these. Some are Alps, others are MX, maybe someone can tell from the caps (I can't). One version here, others in older posts if you search "luggable": https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10405&p=462705#p462705

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Omnikey-102-Blue-Alp-Northgate-keyboard-System-Vintage-New-Box-/303579419858 Interesting to see this 2nd generation Omnikey has blue alps switches. Price is already high though. Yes, it’s kind of “too new” to have Blue Alps. Made in 1990. My OmniKey from December of 1989 al...

Re: [WTB] Reasonably Priced ALPS SKCM Blue Keyboard

I'll second the Northgate Omnikey recommendation, provided it's an early one from 1989-1990. The Northgates have incredible build quality, and tend to hold up well. Monterey K102 and K104 are nice Alps boards also, again you'll want one from 1989-1990 to get the good switches. Look for a black cable...

Re: [WTB] Reasonably Priced ALPS SKCM Blue Keyboard

If you can't find a blue Alps board for what you want to pay may I suggest an early white Alps board instead? Early white SKCM switches from 1989-90 sound and feel the same as blue SKCM, at least to some of us. You won't have the vanity and bragging rights of blues, but you will have a very nice key...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

That's another late one. Hard to predict switches on the Montereys since they seem to have used multiple types concurrently. The three K104s on my list closest to that serial number have, one each, white clones, white bamboo SKCM, and blue SMK "Monterey" switches. edit: the attached photo offers a c...

Re: [WTB][EU-AT] ISO Alps Keycaps + Stabilizers

From the earlier discussion it looks like Matias and AEKII have the stem centered to the narrow part. From my own experience Datacomp and Azio also came that way. I'll check the others I have here now that we have a reference to work from. Four more examples for the list of Alps ISO Enter caps. Lef...

Re: [WTB][EU-AT] ISO Alps Keycaps + Stabilizers

Damn I hoped that I was wrong about the 6312. That's really helpful, I think what I would need for that one custom is an enter keycap with the stem centered in the narrow part. It seems like the enter keycap with the stem centered in the wider part is the most common type. I have a bunch of differe...

Re: [WTB][EU-AT] ISO Alps Keycaps + Stabilizers

Ah thanks for reminding me, I'm basically looking for a TKL layout like the Focus FK-3002 would be without numpad. No stepped caps lock that is and 1.5u Ctrl, Alt and 7u space. I have no clue what stem positions on enter keys there are, could you explain that to me? On the topic of Acer 6312 keycap...

Re: [WTB][EU-AT] ISO Alps Keycaps + Stabilizers

Thanks for the great link, I was not aware of that. The funny thing is I just built a custom keyboard and I made the plate with swillkb and I thought that I messed up the enter key placement, but it might just be that all my enter keycaps are not the right type. Here take a look: JPEG_20200507_0120...

Re: [WTB][EU-AT] ISO Alps Keycaps + Stabilizers

Are you looking for caps to fit a specific keyboard, or building from scratch? Alps caps are far from universal; there are at least three different stem positions on the ISO Enter keys and two on Caps Lock. Bottom rows can be quite a challenge. I have a set of Italian ISO caps from an Acer 6312, new...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

I don't know exactly what "Staff" means on the Monterey boards, but I don't think you can use that to predict which switches one uses. In the database of Monterey keyboards I have eight K2AX boards on record. Four have blue Alps SKCM, two have Mitsumi MX mount, and two don't have a switch type liste...

The kind of “easily” which involves desoldering every switch in the entire Filco, I guess? Some of us like switch modding. I do not belong to that group! What a hassle! What’s extra annoying is I like the weight of reds, so no need to monkey around with custom springs (which I do have around here s...

Re: ProXellent keyboard only working in BIOS

Yeah it was a bit surprising to me too, but I like it. I think linear clones are closer to the originals than clicky clones. The Macros work the following way: First you press the right alt + ctrl + macro key to get into macro mode. This is signaled by the macro lock light. Only in macro mode macro...

Re: ProXellent keyboard only working in BIOS

Sure, it comes with linear alps clones with a green slider and I am pretty sure that it was manufactured by Focus, because the keycaps look like they are the same as on my fk-3002. Pretty sturdy construction too, I really like it. It came with a lot of features including the before mentioned macro ...

Re: ProXellent keyboard only working in BIOS

Does the keyboard have an XT/AT switch or is it autodetect? If it has a switch try the other mode. If it's autodetect try another converter. May be a conflict if both the keyboard and converter (and OS) are trying to set the mode.

Re: When did you first start appreciating keyboards?

I'm one of those old timers who started playing with computers in the late '80s. My first one was a CP/M that I/O'd through a terminal, so I got to (indirectly) choose my keyboard. My first terminal was a Televideo 950 (Futaba MD switches) but I switched to a Zenith using Alps (SKCC?) switches becau...

Re: Omnikey Ultra with just one port?

the pushbutton is a reset switch, Does that mean reset the keyboard or reset the computer? It resets the computer. The Northgate User's Manual calls it a "system warm boot" switch. I quote, "The small button on the back of the keyboard can be used to reboot your computer. Depressing the button perf...

Re: Omnikey Ultra with just one port?

Thanks, I believe the "0J" is a date code, probably October 1990. The Model 560,0020 Ultras first appeared around "0H" (August 1990). Those had a version code 6.03 and then 6.04 like yours, so you've got a relatively early one. Later Ultras had a version code of 6.05F and I'm thinking those were th...

It depends on the model and generation. Gen1 Northgates (102 only) had an attached cable. Gen2 Plus and Ultra models had a PS/2 connector and 2 ADB connectors. Those are the ones with the dipswitches accessible through a slot on the back edge. Gen3 Northgates had only a PS/2 connector. Those had the...
