Re: Alps Appreciation

Wow, pristine blue alps switches. They deserve a good heavy keyboard. I recently got a Chicony with blue Alps, it's ok, but it's like a Lada with a Ferrari motor. Great switches, good electronics (N-Key rollover), shit housing. So far I have blue Alps in a KB-101A, a couple early Northgates, a Mont...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Wow! This is in amazing condition! It should fit just fine into the 2002 case. Thanks for the encouragement! I started a new topic in the Gallery for this, and hopefully I won't hit any major stumbling blocks. https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=22072 I bought the black case donor new back...

Focus FK-2001/2002 Project!

I have two Focus keyboards that I'm hoping to make into one useful one. The PC board/plate/switch donor is a clean, but irregularly yellowed early FK-2001 with blue SKCM switches. I'm hoping to put the guts into a black FK-2002 case. The black one I bought new many years ago, and I used it until I w...

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYSWITCH thread

More stuff from my storage. I have four Datacomp Mac keyboards. One has normal, branded white SKCM switches. The other three have unbranded switches as in the photo. These have wide mounting tabs like normal Alps, not four tabs like most clones. But no branding whatsoever on upper or lower housings....

Re: Alps Appreciation

Today I dug this Focus FK-2001 out of my storage. This is as I got it, twenty-some years ago. Surprisingly clean, not much use. The Blue Alps were not a surprise, but I didn't expect it to have a single stabilizer and guide pin on the Enter key. Previous Focus boards I've worked on have had two stab...

I'm relatively new here on deskthority, how do we do this?

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

Could very well be the same OEM of the basic parts as Dolch used. Early Dolch keyboards were similar to this one's: with Cherry MX switches and thin pad-printed keycaps. Those lunchbox cases were somewhat generic back in the 286/386/486 days. You could buy them separately and install your own mini-...

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread

Hey! I think I got that board off ebay the other day :-) Serial number and little smudge close to the broken clip are the same. The seller (or someone) wrapped the top case in some sort of cammo.....doesn't look awful, but that's why I was thinking of transplanting the innrards into a model F case....

Re: Univac Keyboard (Micro Switch)

Wow, you weren't kidding. I finally caved over the weekend and bought a proper desodering gun with temperature control, vacuum, etc. It arrived today and I just tested it out. I set it to about where you said you set your station and got to work. The solder melts pretty much instantly and you suck ...

Re: [SHIPPED] Hua-Jie AK-CN2 Alps clones (ROUND 2)

That's a good point, and it's also the very reason our old company existed in the first place. We bought surplus components from companies that for whatever reason no longer needed the parts. And of course one of the reasons was their misjudging the demand for their product. Since we were (in theory...

Re: [SHIPPED] Hua-Jie AK-CN2 Alps clones (ROUND 2)

I've been thinking about this for several days now, and I think I've finally figured out why the whole group buy thing bugs me so much. I've eaten 40 bucks on this deal, so I feel that I'm entitled to state my opinion. It's remotely possible that my switches were lost or stolen during shipping, but ...

Re: Univac Keyboard (Micro Switch)

It's counterintuitive, but a lower temperature on the (de)soldering tool can actually put more heat into the part. From decades of PC board work I've learned that it's better to get in and out quickly, which is easier with a higher temp iron. I use an old Weller station with an 800 degree (F) tip mo...

This is one I hadn't seen before. Bulgarian relegendable with what might be Cherry M9 switches? It's already XT/AT compatible, so that's a help. Franklin FKB-3 Project

I just finished a fun little project, installing new guts in a Franklin FKB-3. I bought one of these last year expecting it to have green Alps. That was before Chyros posted his review of this model, which identified the switches as Datacomp foam and foil. I couldn't get it to work on any of my conv...

Hokey smokes, Bullwinkle! Are those pre-Alps blues? Perhaps ForwarD Electronics? Pretty sure 'FD' means ForwarD Electronics. I don't think they are pre-Alps blues, some early blues have black switchplate, as far as I know. so to be clear, the only switches with the complicated switchplate are the o...

Re: Picked up an FK-5001 and it has a strange issue

So I saw on eBay a Focus FK-5001 going for $60+S&H, I shot the guy an offer of $40 and he bit, so, well, now I've got an FK-5001. I was lucky in one respect, it had never had the little plastic insulator taken out from the battery compartment so when I opened it in hesitation to see if I had to add...
