Re: Great/Interesting Finds

Yup. I just corrected myself. Thanks, Polecat. I mentioned in the WTB section that I have an Apple Extended Keyboard II with Mitsumi mechanical switches (not Mitsumi miniature mechanical -- that's a completely different switch), but I'm missing the stabilizer for the space bar, so I haven't been ab...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

I'll repost my warning: I bought a lot of switches from him. IIRC, I wanted Alps cream damped. He ended up sending me a handful of random Alps cream and white switches. I complained and his response was along the lines of, "I'm an old guy and can't tell colors apart anymore." I also know that there...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

I saw this one the other day. If you know what the switches are, please post. I really like the key caps. Wiki suggests it's a variation of Mitsumi Standard Mechanical. https://deskthority.net/wiki/Monterey_K7S I had one of those about thirty years ago, but I don't remember what the switches felt l...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

cool thanks for the info I love my omnikey but why anyone would want one with a single unit backspace is beyond me lol I agree, but apparently that doesn't bother some people. I found a photo of a Focus FK-555 with the same odd stabilizer method on the spacebar: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.ph...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

https://www.ebay.com/itm/174794210308?hash=item28b28bfc04:g:SfcAAOSwzGRgvWRA never seen a single unit backspace on an omnikey, how common is this? Not common. Only the very early ones had that. And the On/Off switch, which (presumably) swaps the Ctrl and Caps Lock positions like a Focus FK-555. The...

Re: Gold Label Omni Key 102 Questions

Yes, those are the tests to do first. Bad connections are usually caused by moisture/corrosion or physical damage, and there's no reason to suspect either from what I can see. As clean as that keyboard looks I wouldn't be surprised if someone had cleaned it already. Personally I would just brush off...

Re: Acer KB-101A circuitry questions

Those Data Generals are really Acer 6312 models, which used a slightly modified version of the KB-101A-style case. This seller had dozens, but they are down to the last few, so don't wait too long.

Re: Acer KB-101A circuitry questions

Looking at my old notes on this. On my KB-101A the connections are (top to bottom): pin# - signal - color 6 - clock - brown 5 - data - yellow 4 - n/c - none 3 - reset - white 2 - ground - orange 1 - Vcc +5 volts - red The black wire in the cable was the shield and went to the tab on the switchplate....

Re: Gold Label Omni Key 102 Questions

Have you found and fixed the problem yet? I would recommend that before cleaning the switches. It looks very clean already in the photos. I *strongly* recommend putting something over the window on the EPROM! Stray UV or even sunlight can erase the contents with it uncovered. Hopefully that isn't wh...

Hmmm, I doubled the count in my age group in darkcruix's poll by clicking just once; that can't be good even if I did understand the math.

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread

Ok, I know this says it's a Monterey K207, but what *is* a Monterey K207? Google, wiki, DT search all show nothing. I've been playing with Montereys for thirty years and I've never seen one before.

Re: KPT (or possibly clone) comparison

My Alps clone KPT84 is the same layout, but with black and gray caps. Really not bad, I said Tai Hao clones but I meant Hua Jie, and those usually don't hold up well over time. But I got it NIB and it's been good so far. The "different 84" looks very much like a Focus FK-727/747 clone! I almost boug...

Re: KPT (or possibly clone) comparison

Thanks, interesting and very informative. I have a later KPT-84 with Tai Hao Alps clones, and I'm glad I got it instead of the earlier version with KPT switches. I can at least swap in genuine Alps when the clones go belly-up. It gets limited, but frequent use on a P1 that runs my ancient SCSI page ...

Re: Share Your SEXIEST Vintage Boards!

Ok, honestly I'm not quite sure what to make of "SEXIEST" in the same sentence as "keyboard", but presumably it's used in the pornographic sense, in that seeing it makes one WANT it. I've gone out of my way to justify the look and feel of my keyboards (even to myself) in practical terms, other than ...

https://deskthority.net/wiki/Alps_SKCM_Cream Looks like it is cream. The futaba appears to be added by someone other than alps and is very funny that it is there for sure. Re: Mechanical Keyboard Switch assortment/samples [misc Alps]

Interesting find! Too bad it's not dated. Is that an orange next to the blue SKCM? So only orange and blue SKCM, tactile and tactile/clicky ("with sound") at that time? No mention of a Korean branch office, at least not in English. And fun to see the Futaba MA switch stuck there for comparison.

Re: Buckling Spring Heresy!

This is a Chicony 5181 I think. Can't read the FCC ID but the back label is very Chicony. Switches would then be Aristotle? Identity probably just rebranded a bunch of stuff. Now that you say that I can "see" the Chicony model number clearly in the FCC code. Good call on that. I'm sure you're right...

Re: Buckling Spring Heresy!

Got it, thanks! The evolution of layouts and key functions is interesting stuff, to me at least. There's a lot of info in the old computer magazines, but unfortunately I donated most of mine to a resource center that's gone now. I lost interest when Win95 came out; I was just another user after that.

Re: Buckling Spring Heresy!

It could be that any 90's board mechanical or not with that extra key after the right shift is likely a Cantech design. Other than the modern 60-70% craze with condensing the nav cluster into the shift key, I am hard pressed to think of any use of that key layout other than Cantech. Might explain t...

@Polecat, I have that exact instruction card and I dont think the interpretation is that you can turn these around as it would not be possible with the integrated barrels (they only go one way). The instruction on the card is basically what you state, ensure the spring is in the cap and properly se...

Somebody else's...of course.

Slightly less unseriously, do these have printed or doubleshot caps? The beige DFK-191s came both ways.
