Re: Beamspring Switchplate Restore.

The bottom plate is made out of the same material as the top plate, right? I am thinking I should get that re-plated as well if it does not add much more onto the cost. whatever leaked out of the insulation mat ate away at the zinc. The metal below is completely fine though. https://imgur.com/a/K8au...

Re: Beamspring Switchplate Restore.

I found a couple of places that will strip off the zinc, and then re-plate it for around $140.
Has anyone had any experience in getting their beamspring plates re-plated in zinc?

Re: Beamspring Switchplate Restore.

You got lucky! At least yours wasn't like this one I got a while back: Yea, I have seen quite a few beamsprings that were much worse than mine. Do you know what conditions that one was stored in? Mine was kept in an un-air conditioned house next to the beach in Florida, so considering that, I got p...

Beamspring Switchplate Restore.

Hello. I am restoring an IBM 5251 keyboard. I have already restored the switches, but I still need to restore the plate and replace the foam and the insulation mat. I did not get as lucky as some other people, and my switchplate has come corrosion on it. Here are a couple of pictures. https://imgur....

Recently bought some Pingmasters from this seller in the US. Re: Alps Appreciation

But why? Skcm browns are much harder to find, afaik. Gambled on a videowriter and it paid off. It's a very complete unit, with the original box, instructions, floppy disks, and extra ribbons. I'm thinking about replacing the switches with skcl greens or something and trying to find someone who real...

How much longer do I have to order one? The date the website says to order one by keeps moving up at the end of the month.

Barrel plate (barrels are "chimneys" in Unicomp parlance) and other parts are the same for SSK and standard, IBM was fastidious about keeping things similar and interchangeable. So I sanded off some of the big rust spots, but the plate still looks pretty rough. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to clean the plate, or should I just leave it the way it is? Thanks!

Just throwing this out there: Make sure to inspect your barrel plate for any micro cracks (usually along the middle rows). In my '88 SSK they wound up being bad enough (but hard to see), and got even worse when I started drilling holes that I needed to replace it and start over. You can buy a repla...

Okay, so the plan right now is to buy a new membrane and blanket from unicomp. I have seen people suggest either folding the extra membrane under the plate, or cutting the membrane and then redrawing the traces with a conductive pen/paint/tape. I have never actually seen someone do either if these t...

The pad is gone. I have contacted unicomp about getting a new membrane, since I found the membrane also has other problems.

Re: Help Restoring SSK

It probably wasnt 100% necessary to take apart the barrel assembly, but it sure made cleaning the barrel plate alot easier. I somehow managed to wipe off a trace while cleaning the membrane with a paper towel and water. Assuming I do not destroy any other pads, would it be better to use conductive p...

Re: Help Restoring SSK

I have removed the rivets and dissadembled the rest of the board. If I were to fully submerge the barrel plate in water for cleaning, would I have to apply lubricant to the board afterwards? Also, does anyone have any tips for cleaning the membrane? Thanks! Here are pictures of the blanket and the m...
