Model M improved with RGB

Guys, I found something I know you'll really enjoy. Someone took an unwanted old Model M and added brand new modern RGB lighting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruhqXSKo6XU&feature=youtu.be Too bad he had to restore a weathered one. Maybe it's time to start doing this to pristine Model M's as well?...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?

Are any of the Chinese MX manufacturers going after Ergo Clears? The official "Cherry MX Ergo Clears" is Cherry playing catch-up to the clone-manufacturers, many years late. Of course they don't mention the competition in their marketing. I can't follow these things because their choice of product ...

Re: Gasket mount keyboards vs plate mount

People on this forum might be interested in the "Frog TKL." I don't know if they are still being made, but they're an affordable variation of top-mount, but using rubber pins ["Tadpoles"] that allow you to adjust the stiffness. So you can make a stiff or kinda-flexy top-mount TKL, using the tadpole-...

Re: New Keyboard Came In The Mail Today - Matias Mini Quiet Click for PC

The "Tactile Pro" is the clicky one. But the Tactile Pro is only available in a Mac configuration. Not the end of the world, but there is no Insert key. It's replaced by a fn key that doesn't produce a scan code. Thanks. (What a convoluted naming method on Matias' part.) I don't typically use the I...

"A gasket mount uses gasket material between the plate and keyboard housing on both top and bottom sides. This gives the board a slightly more cushioned feel since the plate isn’t in direct contact with the other metal components of the keyboard." https://www.keyboard.university/200-courses/keyboard...

Re: Gasket mount keyboards vs plate mount

Gasket-mount is getting much cheaper. I'm talking $179 kits, or even $59 kits [available during AliExpress sales]. In fact, gasket-mount has become synonymous with the budget section now. I have one [IKKI68 Aurora], and yes, they are nice if you are looking for a softer typing experience. Plate moun...

Re: New Keyboard Came In The Mail Today - Matias Mini Quiet Click for PC

Forgive me, but it's been a while since I looked into Matias.

Can somebody refresh me: is the "quiet click" the tactile one, and the "tactile pro" the clicky one?

Also, which of them are still available? I wouldn't mind an ALPS-like tactile keyboard, but yes, quiet is better.

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?

Talking about Cherry clones: has anybody been crazy enough to clone MX Clears? I suppose you intended to be snarky, but I also don't know how ignorant you are: There are several options for "Ergo Clears" with lighter springs that lack the scratchiness and tight keycap mount of real Clear — but I've...

Crrrreak. There's upsetting to an impossible "audiophile" and then there's downright BAD with a capital SHUFF SHUFF SHUFF. :P Are any of the Chinese MX manufacturers going after Ergo Clears? I mean are any of them targeting deep tactility without a click? I can't follow these things because their c...

Re: ELITEBOOK keyboard rant

Laptop keyboards are getting worse-and-worse. It's not just a generational factor. Modern designers, especially at Apple, seem dominated by the phone/tablet mindset, in which keyboards aren't thought necessary. So they are an afterthought, and they use the minimal possible keyboard. The ideal laptop...

Re: suggestions for /dev/tty2 ?

Yeah, I finally got my dev/tty with Triumph mods. Great stuff. Works well with Ergo Clears, as expected. Profile is bit demanding, in that your keyboard has to be at certain angles. Doesn't necessarily work well in my keyboard tray. I like the PBT MT3 more than the ABS. I think the mold for the PBT ...

Re: MT3 Doubleshot

I think it is because, if the proposed black / white MT3 ABS keycaps are released, then you can buy the right mods and alphas to get 3278.

If they make those, they should add Honeywell Red / Turf Green / Honey and Co. accents and Dolch Cyan as options.

Hey, let us know how those BOX Pinks went. It's all a matter of preference, but for those who want a lower actuation than BOX Navy, there's a lot of opinions over which is best. I enjoy typing on Jades, although I feel that they are a bit weak on the upstroke. The Whites are said to be what MX Blue ...

Stay tuned for a Realforce RGB review. I do have a pretty good cache of "Nopre" boards here, knockoff Chinese/Korean electrostatic capacitive boards using the same principle. Re: [New Product] Kailh Silent Box Switch

My evaluation of the BOX Silent Brown switch is that it succeeds at being a quiet BOX tactile. It is right there on the level of Aliaz and Zilent, and may even be slightly quieter. Its tactile characteristics are in between that of the Zilent V2 and the BOX Brown. Both have the tactile ceiling at th...

I have tried Halo Trues, Hako Clears, and Hako Violets. The Hako Violets are within the same ballpark as regular BOX Browns in terms of weight and tactility. The tactility of Hako Violets is sharper than BOX Brown, though. Hako Violet is not too far off from BOX Silent Brown. If you can imagine a ru...

Okay, my BOX Silent Browns finally arrived. tl;dr: BOX Silent Browns are business-like, sturdy, and silent switches no heavier and slightly more tactile than MX Brown. To get BOX Silent Brown, dampen an MX Brown, remove scratchiness/sandiness, reduce wobble and put the bump at top. Here's what I po...

When I was very young, I experienced the tail end of good keyboards in elementary school. We had what I remember as IBM Model Ms in a computer lab, that school was an IBM shop. They were running 8086s and 286s. The keyboards were real battleships and were memorable. At the same time, my home receive...

I know they just put it up, but the kits are behaving strangely. They're all listed as negative value (i.e. -$55), as if you are trying to buy them instead of the base kit. When you try to add a kit after purchasing the base, it doesn't really tell you how much the kit cost, and it is still listed a...
