Re: Is it just me?

I don't find Vintage MX Black bad. Very recently, I made a custom keyboard build with them. I have some pre-retooled Reds in the keyboard I am using now, and they are nowhere as smooth as the Blacks. Post-retooled blacks should be smoother, however, but I have heard complaints from people that retoo...

Re: Keyboards banned from work

It's all about boiling the frog. 5 years ago, everyone in my office used Apple's default aluminum keyboards. I brought in a Cherry MX brown board, and everyone commented how loud it was. Then a few more people got mechanical keyboards, mostly Cherry MX reds or browns. Then one of the most vocal ori...

Re: Keyboards banned from work

I've been running MX Clears at the office for some time already, no complaints yet and a few compliments on the custom keycaps. My Matias is quieter but I've had keys chatter on it before so I'm hesitant to bring it since I wouldn't have the tools or time to deal with that there. Not sure I could g...

Re: Is it just me?

When lubed, most of the MX linears are comparable in feel to vintage MX black. It's all personal preference, really. Some things are objective, like smoothness, but other things are not, like sound or feel.

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Lol. I think to get this project underway, we will need to 1) raise 100k for thick keycap molds 2) make Zeal sort of switches, where they have Alps parts but in MX stem format. this is why we need to stop humouring all these wide eyed idea guys with zero credentials and even less experience that ke...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Those C. Itoh caps are beautiful! Though I somehow expected them to look "more?" spherical. They look almost flat? I'm sure it's something that needs to be experienced in person regardless. Would love a set for myself someday :D Wow, the legend himself appears. Never seen a comment by you before, i...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Thanks Elrick. MX is a flawed design, though, and there's only so long before people start thinking about if there could be something better than MX switches. You can only go so far with such a design.

There are the "XDA ALPS", I don't know who is producing them, but it might be available for business.
They seem to be thick or at least not thin. :)
Those are pretty thick! Unfortunately, getting those in another profile will require new molds.

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Because moulds are expensive. My project only needs 3-4 moulds while new keycap tooling will need anywhere from 13-100+ different moulds depending on what kind of printing method is being used. Don't forget that Tai-Hao more than likely has all their old keycap moulds from the Alps glory days. I di...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

collective bargaining is way easier to come by than benevolent rick folks In the old days if you couldn't swing it yourself you used investors (and cut them in on the profits, of course). Profit with no risk sounds too good to be true, so I guess it has to work. Except when the deal goes bad, that ...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Update: SP will need new tooling to produce thicker keycaps. Unfortunately, that will be "somewhere in the neighborhood of $100k". I will need to see if there are other manus willing to produce keycaps.

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Most important to me (and admittedly I'm not a good consumer...) is which keyboard(s) they'd work on? How about something for Northgates? I've got more than a dozen of those in various shades of yellow. Personally I'm fine with Tai Hao profile and thickness. Got to be double shots. For color someth...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

OK guys, Melissa from SP sent me an email saying they only sublimate on DCS profile, and they only do custom orders at the moment. I sent her an email back asking if it was possible to produce thicker keycaps. I'll let you all know if I get a response. Since I'm not the best at designing things, if ...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Hi all, Unless I'm going to continually produce Alps keycaps, I will have to switch the material to dye sub PBT. This is so that production costs don't outweigh the demand. Instead of the white on gray, I will need to use something like black on light gray. I have changed the description of my initi...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

anmq91, I wanted to start here because there are many Alps users on Deskthority. Right now, I'm just seeing if there is demand for Alps keycaps (apparently, there is). It depends what profile you guys want. In my opinion, no matter what profile one uses, the keycaps have to be reasonably thick, with...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

It's going to be a pain to make Alps profile. I've got to go with whatever's available. I can't skimp on looks, especially because there are so many different Alps boards. One aesthetic will not fit all keyboards. I agree with you that Cherry MX dominates the keycap market, but this is due to keyboa...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

AT101 Alps profile. For stabs, MX mount/Matias are probably the best option. I will have to do more research on that, and ask around to see if there are any other choices. Edit: Alps mount looks like the way to go. It will have to be determined by where the keycaps go, and if they are going to be ad...

Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Hi, not sure where to post this as I am new to Deskthority (I spend a lot of time on Geekhack). I am interested in making reasonably thick Alps dyesubs. I don't think Tai-Hao quality should be the standard, nor should people be satisfied with Signature Plastics. My keycaps will look presentable on m...
