Re: 1983 F/XT: first impressions

I picked up an inexpensive dirty XT which has a couple of numpad keys that are like you say. They got better with normal use, but still only fire 90% of the time.

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

There are a few of these left. May I ask why you have lost interest in ALPS switches? Are you feeling okay? ;) I have only three inexpensive alps boards, perhaps poor examples. I have used them along with my few model f's, m's, and cherries in my little stash. I find that a modern unicomp is what my...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Yes I see your point. Each 30g for $19 plus mail sound more reasonable? First class mail should make it come to about $25 shipped. I think a favor was called in for this jar, so its not likely to be available again. Usually he would need to order a much larger quantity to get something made.

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

I was hesitant to bump this old 2020 thread because it took much longer than what I stated it would, but a small batch of 2583 is now available. If this is still something anyone is interested in let me know. I have kind of lost interest in alps all together myself. If any demand remains from others...

Out of the loop maybe, but certainly not out of the goop.
I see now that there are reproduction beamers in various layouts. Relatively affordable at $300. May have to try one, one day.

My fastest boards are the microsoft ergonomics. I caught a beat down from my eleven year old nephew on chiclets this past thanksgiving. He did 130 on a chrome book! The test app he uses is lenient on typos. But yea real world 50wpm no errors is what is really gettin things done. Racing is fun, 100+ ...

Re: I spilled coffee on my new Mini M

Dehumidifier a/c unit could speed up the dry. Some old geezers will let a stuck motor soak in diesel for YEARS while they wait for the rings to free up. I've got one soaking on year #3 in my shed.. a week is easy. The whole coffee fiasco is why I like M's though. Hard to kill, and even if you do man...

I use an XT, an AT, and an m101 in rotation. I'm on the fence whether its more annoying, or good for your mind to have to adjust. I'm starting to sway from the former to the latter.. I approve of the jank!

Re: IBM Model F XT 83-key won't come to life

Get a fat tip iron that has more thermal inertia than a $6 iron, try to heat the substrate you will be applying the solder to first. Do not melt the solder directly with the iron. When you touch the solder to the pre-heated wire or whatever it is, it should flow. Sometimes having a higher wattage ir...

Re: New Model M vs Model F Repro

I kind of agree with what fischer says. If somebody made an affordable modern reproduction of a 1988 Civic I would be all over that the same way I was all over a reproduction M. A modern 1988 Porsche 911.. maybe that too if I could scrape together the money.

You could drill a small dimple or hole. I've done that on modern keyboards where I wore the bumps completely smooth. It serves the same purpose just as well.

Re: Mechanical Mice equivalent?

If I had a good ball mouse I would run it as a daily.. more power to anybody who wants to do it. You do have to clean the rollers which is no big deal. Also if you stop on a dime or go zero to a hundred sometimes the ball inertia can keep the cursor from doing what you want for a split second. Which...

I kind of agree with davkol on the rubber gome keyboards. They are fine. Which is why mx browns or otemu blue or whatever cheap attainable else thing gets you halfways from "fine" to endgame will sell. I guess its not really an unpopular opinion. Only unpopular here amongst the fringe lunatics. We d...

For the same cost as a brand new lexington M, I can get a filthy binding alps white board or take 2 months to relearn a defunct xt layout after soldering up a usb adapter.. or make one month's payment of a 2 year payment plan on a beamspring.. let me think about this one.

THIS YES. That FXT space bar is beastly.

I will try this on my some of mx blacks caps to "turn them into mx reds" too. Maybe some of that silicone caulk in a tube would work I wonder.
