I did not know this existed. Thanks for that. :D

Specifically:

It's a treasure trove of information, if you need to interact with a pre-USB keyboard at a low level.

Re: Anyone familiar with how manufacturers implemented special features on the PS/2 protocol?

Andries Brouwer's "keyboard scancodes" document says "sequences involving eb are often used for manipulating extra LEDs", and gives these examples: The Chicony keyboard needs command sequences eb 00 xy, with xy = 01 for the Moon LED and xy = 02 for the zzZ LED. The IBM EZ Button keyboard needs comma...

A chunky metal box with a big switch does look the part alongside a vintage keyboard. Really needs an old-school embossed Dymo label to complete the look.

I sometimes daydream about finding various keyboard unobtainium for cheap at a yard sale. Though I'm not sure I could ethically give a grieving widow pennies for her late husband's "garage full of junk" when it's actually worth a fortune.

Re: Save-a-Term: Use a regular PC keyboard with an original 5251/3278 terminal

Love the choice of “regular” keyboard to prove this worthy project’s chops! Nice work all round. :D As a 3278 keyboard owner, I’m curious what uses people have found for the terminals themselves. I put my beamspring through the same full workload as all my keyboards, driving a modern system just as...

Re: IO expanders with RP2040

Not all 74-series chips are TTL. 74HC chips are CMOS, For example this parallel input shift register: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/sn74hc165.pdf Can operate down to 2V. These should absolutely be powered off of the 3.3V rail! And that is the same when it comes to any fully featured IO expander...

If you mix the RP2040 with 74-series TTL, remember that the former will not tolerate 5V inputs.

Re: Restoration blunders

I fried two Model M2 PCBs trying to replace those damn capacitors. I also messed up the chopstick method on a Model M and turned the switch rocker out of place. That was actually fortunate because it prompted me to learn how to do a bolt mod. I've had capacitor replacement on my M2 on my todo for a...

Yes I think you are right! That key may have been damaged in shipping. If there's no way to gently push the stabilizer back into place please send me an email to arrange a replacement key.

Got my keyboard today, more impressions when I install keys and try it out in the following days. Was sad to see a somewhat banana-like spacebar, here's hoping it works at least. Has anyone tried anything for strain relief for the cable? Since the hole is bigger than the cable's diameter, perhaps s...

Re: F62+F77 orders now open! New Kishsaver+Industrial Model F Keyboards

I've only been able to get my ANSI enter key working reliably by substituting a genuine IBM model M key. The supplied new model F enter key binds. I've repeatedly tried the "wiggle" process described in the manual, to no effect. I also tried, as per the manual, using a piece of foam to reduce the tr...

Not sure if you have the classic or ultra compact version of the case but each solenoid includes a mounting kit to securely mount the solenoid inside the classic cases. I would not recommend the other mounting options you describe. For a higher end mounting someone also published a deluxe 3d printe...

Re: F62+F77 orders now open! New Kishsaver+Industrial Model F Keyboards

Yep, I'm using the factory-provided firmware and I've tried both extremes of solenoid throw. I suspect the mounting didn't help: I had tried the low-effort approach of sticking the solenoid to the case using a double-sided sticky pad, but this probably cushioned the vibration too much. I need to try...

Re: F62+F77 orders now open! New Kishsaver+Industrial Model F Keyboards

A modern microcontroller costs very little to manufacture, and not much more to buy (you can get an RP2040 for pennies). There'd be very little to gain by making an MCU with 1970s-era processing power, even if it could keep up with the modern demands placed on it.

On the other hand, I suspect that most people who have been waiting years wouldn't mind an extra fortnight to get a pristine box, if only because it helps the resale value.
