Re: Is there any way to completely fix the sound of clicky Alps?
I know this an old post, but I'd like to contribute with some pictures (In case more people need to fix their upstoke-clicks in the future) I think I found a way similar to this just now. I don't know if it works long term but bending the tabs at the bottom of the leaf outwards can fix the upstroke ...

Any ideas on what this is? https://i.imgur.com/Vae9ZT3.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/SfqXCu1.jpeg Here's a similar keyboard, but it seems to have the mounts broken off. https://i.imgur.com/pW0A1TR.png The keyboard also seems to have the exact same layout as this other post here (But with different switch...

Re: Problem with stuck/unresponsive key on IBM Model M
Bolt mods are a lot of bother, I won't deny that! But they're not impossible or the realm of experts. Even I pulled one off! Plenty of folk swear by them as an essential long term maintenance technique for all Model Ms. I'm in no hurry to embark upon a second, however… I'd agree with that. I...

Re: Problem with stuck/unresponsive key on IBM Model M
Unfortunately, I don't know if there's a way to take out the flipper itself without taking apart the whole board. That being said... I tried to resposition it with tweezers and then the key registers, but it ulimately gets out of alignment I'm wondering if you could realign it, then do a "Partial Sc...

Re: Buckling Spring Switch Life
When enough of a Model M's rivets are broken, the barrel plate can break apart in the folds between the rows of keys and it can no longer be bolt-modded. If you have a ruined soldering iron around, you can easily patch up a cracked barrel plate. It does need a bit of precision, but otherwise, it's ...

Re: Model M Cushionless Mod
I would probably cut the cushions away with a needle file instead of clippers. True, it would be slower and a bit tedious, but not as slow as waiting for some replacement flippers to be shipped to me. That could be a wiser method to this mod. Though, as you said, it takes a bit longer. If you can d...

Re: Model M Cushionless Mod
https://i.imgur.com/gLiaEDH.jpeg I read up on an interesting measurement Pandrew posted on the Discord server. He used a "package weighing hook" through his keytester to see just how much force it took to bottom out. He compared an original IBM keycap with a Unicomp keycap. (Of course with a cushio...

Re: Model M Cushionless Mod
That being said, it still feels distinctly like a Model M. Expect a subtle upgrade, not a “transformation”. But I will say that my Wheelwriter 5 which has the cushionless flippers feels pretty much identical to an F, except for in sound. Oh damn, Interesting. I just tried some F caps on my M, but i...

Re: Model M Cushionless Mod
Wow. Nice! Does it change the apparent weight too? Does it make them lighter? If so how do they compare to an F? I am tempted to try this. Unfortunately not. The weighting remains the same. Again, the only thing changing here is the bottom-out feel, which becomes quite similar to an F! :D (Not comp...

Would've been a solid comparison if only you mentioned that it's specifically MX-only. Good video otherwise.

Re: Longterm Daily Drivers
I always go back to an M, but I recently got my new favourite. One that was really fit for the job of a "daily". https://i.imgur.com/NB0ue0A.png It's just a dirt-cheap Model M; perfect for the job in every single way. I got better Model Ms in general, but this one is THE beater M for a nonchalant 0-...

Re: Closest non buckling spring buckling spring alternative?
I'm sure there are switches that replicate the gradual tactility of buckling springs, but I doubt they're common. As far as common boards, I think I heard some people bring up the Fujitsu FKB4700. Can someone confirm or am I mistaking it for another board? I've heard mixed feelings about them, but I...

Re: Question about IBM Model M spacebar spring (picture inside)
What is supposed to be in that left hole? I don't think I'm missing any spacers (ie. under certain keys) so is that hole just supposed to be left empty? Some Ms came with split spacebars, like one of these https://i.imgur.com/gCHJXUI.jpeg On the topic of split spacebars, does anyone know if Unicomp...

Re: Beamspring daily drivers?
I did daily a 5251 full-time for a few months. I did love the keyfeel, solenoid, and the tanky build-quality, but I don't think they'll win your heart when coming from an F, especially a 122. Thing is, as much as people love to glorify them, I don't think the keyfeel is that far off from an F. It fe...

Re: Seeking rather specific keyboard recommendations
Don't get a Dell AT101 (unless you get one of the very early, old logo ones). Contrary to what most people say, I think these are a terrible introduction to Alps, unless you swap the switches, or miraculously get one that isn't bamboo Black. Late Alps tactiles are always worse than pine, and the ta...

I am curious though, what exact variant do you have of the Acer? I have a 6311-KW made on 03/26/1996 (MM/DD/YYYY) and it doesn't have and scratchiness that I can detect? Did the quality of the switches drop as production went on? I'm curious because I've been trying to find another one and want to ...

Re: Seeking rather specific keyboard recommendations
Thanks for the suggestions! I have to do some further reading on Alps switches - there are so many that I often get confused. Are the dampening/clicking mods reversible? Any introductory material for the uninitiated? The dampeners are reversible, and I personally find the bottoming out feel extreme...
