Re: Availability of Soarer's converters

Love Hasu and TMK and QMK too. But Soarer has them all beat, pants down, when it comes to macros. Always has done. Nobody does it better.

Re: Stuff you just bought

Nice colourway. A board like that would have caught my eye 30 years ago, too. (And maybe got me into keyboards earlier… and cheaper… note to self: still waiting on that time machine.)

Good luck with the restoration!

Re: Historical question - when did rubber domes eat the world?

Bosses liked their secretarial staff to sound busy, and bosses bought the equipment. No one ever got fired for buying IBM, as they used to say.

The typists themselves might have had very different opinions!

Re: [UK] Kaihua BOX switch test, borrow or buy

So I had a play with the testers myself, meeting up with Anachronism. We'd been poking Topres and fancy IBMs for a while first—I brought "a few" keyboards* in the car—so these little fellas had a harsh comparison. At least one of the Box switches felt sufficiently characterful to stand out to me—not...

I might be after one of those Datalux Spacesavers , depending on available layouts. They have character in spades: https://deskthority.net/wiki/images/thumb/d/d7/Datalux5.jpg/458px-Datalux5.jpg https://deskthority.net/wiki/images/thumb/1/10/Datalux3.jpg/500px-Datalux3.jpg And both varieties of Space...

Re: Historical question - when did rubber domes eat the world?

Actually, I think we're well covered there between the XT keyboard and Ellipse's remake. For what it's worth: I find the OG Kishsaver to be very noticeably better in feel than any XT or AT that I've tried, and I've had a few over the years. (I've also had the pleasure of multiple Kishsavers , brief...

Re: Various resto-mods

Love the Bluetooth M0110. Really have to do that with mine someday. Also really like the sneaky socket upgrade on the ADB board. If turn-key PCBs become a thing, my pre-PS/2 (no Bigfoot!) SGI Granite could really use one. The keyboard's in excellent shape, and has real character, but the protocol is...

Re: Historical question - when did rubber domes eat the world?

You're specifically interested in the IBM perspective, by the sound of it, given your documentary. But your original question "when did rubberdomes eat the world?" is broader and sets off my mental cogs all the more. Where did rubberdomes come from? What's their history? When did they get to the mai...

Re: Bucking Springs, worth it?

I always put media keys on a layer (right where the HHKB puts them) and if I'm using something really big, like TKL!, native volume keys go on the trio of keys at the top right: Scroll Lock etc. Always helps to keep them consistently placed with all your different individual keyboards. As for lighti...

Sex on wheels! Once the road safety standards of the state of California was done with it… not quite so much . Strange. This is the first time I've even considered cars de-evolving over time as happened so plainly to keyboards. In Jaguar's case it was about new consumer law, as I understand it. (The...

Re: 5000 AZERTY Keyboards NOS

I feel like i have the need to clarify a few things on the google table. Or maybe i didin't understand this whole thing correctly. The keyboard price will be around 0,55€ - 0,65€/keyboard (just an estimate). It is essentially free. Now, if you toss into the table, lets say 300€ this will get you ar...

While the E-Type is generally considered a classic among classics, few seem to notice its shocking lack of a spoiler, let alone the suboptimal sound system and questionable cup holders.

Re: Need help with using a soarer's converter with a MX Style KB-5150-1 model F clone

I know Soarer’s fairly well, but on Teensy, not Pro Micro. I blew my only Pro Micro up with that AT I mentioned earlier. Never bought one since. They’re too much trouble. On a Teensy: the LED should definitely go out after successful connection. If it’s constantly lit, you’re in trouble. Usually som...

Re: [UK] Kaihua BOX switch test, borrow or buy

I hear you. Topre's weakness isn't so much the price—though that hurts!—but the lack of options. It's a much smaller ecosystem—really just a single manufacturer—than the ever expanding world of MX.

Re: Does anyone else here still use ball mice?

Only one I ever (very occasionally) use is a vintage Apple ADB mouse, when I'm playing around with a truly ancient Mac. It's… definitely retro. But not an objective improvement over modern stuff, the way vintage keyboards almost always are.

Re: Need help with using a soarer's converter with a MX Style KB-5150-1 model F clone

The LED being lit up on the Pro Micro is probably a bad sign. I think Soarer uses it as a warning indicator. I had similar issues with my IBM Model F AT on one of those. It just drew too much power for the Pro Micro to handle. Went with a Teensy instead. That handled the extra load. The wiring is pr...
