I believe he is referring to the IBM branded Spaceball 2003 that was used on RS6000 series graphics stations.

I have been trying to get my Spaceball 1003 to interface with spacenavd under linux, but the serial interface is non-standard (SGI) and I have not been able to do much ...

The ball device to the right of the keyboard on the left edge is a Spaceball 2003 six-axis controller, also painted black. There were some 2003s rebranded by IBM, which were naturally black.
