We would definitely need to do the same here in France.

Your wiring/soldering work is excellent, bravo. I have no idea if it is possible to set up different backlight zones (keycaps & case) with TMK so I can't help you with the software. However, regarding actual wiring and using a mosfet, flabbergast made a good summary of how to do it with TMK here : h...

how would I wire the LEDs? Depends on how you want to drive them software-wise, in other words how you want to control them and which firmware you use. If you use TMK or another variant, you can wire your LEDs in parallel, with a resistor in series with each LED. There's a good explanation by flabb...

Just because it's plate-mounted doesn't mean you can swap springs without desoldering. For that, the plate needs to have cutouts that allow switches to be opened, like 2, 3 and 4: https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=59837.0;attach=68795;image From what I can see in the imgur album p...

I'd say that different keycaps won't affect the feel of the switches themselves. But they will affect the way your keyboard feels. Not heavier, not lighter, not more tactile, but different to type on.

I can adjust to another layout, to different switch types, to PCB feature set (programmability, backlight), however if I have to type on crappy keycaps I know I'm going to feel miserable. So I'd put keycaps in 1. Thick PBT or ABS in Cherry profile or bust. The rest I can accommodate, but I'd put cas...

Why not make a last small batch to check that everything works, before committing to larger quantities? Too costly?

Great mix of keycaps!

The irony is that the US-Int layout is better suited for some language than dedicated national variants (for instance it's easier to type proper french with US-Int than with ISO-FR).

You mention 12-15€ for 200 boards, and a decent pricing for 1000 of them — what would be the price at that quantity? A Teensy 2.0 costs $16, more for Europeans, and has lesser capabilities (fewer pins, less powerful). A Pro Micro is a good cheap alternative but it's even more limited. With that in m...

Good point. That's why some builders prefer 1.8mm LEDs: http://reho.st/self/0624b9fe8218a73994eff9dfdb34a81504d08eae.jpg They have the same footprint (leg spacing) as 3mm LEDs but are much shorter, so they won't collide with keycaps, even thicker ones. http://reho.st/self/e191e5df62433ffb3ef4d44b0da...

Can you reflow the switch solder joints? Sometimes they look good on the outside but have problems (cold joints). Heat them, and add a bit of solder (the basic hobbyist rosin core solder which contains flux, so that the solder flow well).
