Re: Leading Edge DC-2014 review (Alps SKCM Blue)

One weak point of this design is the use of rubber spacers/bumpers to isolate the PCB from the case. They sort of snap into holes on the inside of the back of the board. Over time the rubber hardens and becomes brittle. Most of mine have broken in two pieces. I would love to find a replacement for ...

Indeed a nice F107! If anyone needs an unrestored one, PM me. The restore is definitely time consuming, but you'll get to enjoy it for a lifetime!

Re: New Beamspring Converters on Ebay

I saw those as well! Main disadvantage I would say is seemingly being unable to change the layout. I'm half curious as to what the original speaker in a Displaywriter actually sounds like as I've never seen a video with that working with the original system, though probably is one out there somewhere.

Re: Sold my car... then I made-to-order this IBM SSK

Very nice indeed! I've only seen a Lotus Elise once in a parking lot, and other than the exotic look, the second thing you notice is just how "space saving" of a car it is! I'm glad that you got to experience the car and that you now have an awesome keyboard to commemorate it!

Amazing! How did you performed such a clean cut over the areas with the copper mask? Just used a Dremel with a cutting wheel attachment actually. I think you could probably also use a bench grinder, but grinding the entire controller off would probably make a lot more potentially harmful dust ;)

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

The full size 3277 variant doesn't come up often, but beware, requires a replacement PCB which I believe there are public drawings out there somewhere for: https://www.ebay.com/itm/173838879554 That layout gets a few extra points for the appropriately placed shift keys. The fact that they are steppe...

Re: Model F XT weird issues

Would have to say there's probably some dust causing an issue, so a full restore or at least completely blowing out all the dust with the back cover off and wiping down the capsense pcb with microfiber cloth would be in order. It's kind of a pain to do it because getting the keyboard back together (...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

I have one of those Merlin boards, though the top case is cracked that I’ll eventually be posting for sale if anyone is interested. It is indeed Fujitsu leaf spring. The area in the top right corner is actually a small matrix display and the logo has a kind of “foil” look to it in person which is pr...

I have full keycap sets for the 5140 if you're interested.

Also have Model 4704 cables which I believe are pretty similar to the NOS Pingmaster cables, but not NOS obviously :-), and I might even have a Pingmaster cable or two as well.

Will PM you.

Re: Most and least reliable keyboard switch?

By the numbers, the most reliable in terms of continuing to work (though feel will definitely be impacted if there's industrial dust present) would be Honeywell Hall Effect. They even work underwater! Most aren't super easy to convert to USB if you are working with vintage hardware, but a lot of pro...

Re: USB to PS/2 + Soarer's Converter?

Hasu makes a USB to USB converter which runs TMK and I believe that it is actually two separate arduinos put together, so it can't run on a single arduino unfortunately. The USB to USB converters I have really only work if the board can support PS/2 output through a USB plug, so really it's just a P...

Re: Nut&Bolt / Screwmod IBM for me?

The problem with bolt modding a specific board is that the shipping to get it to and from the person doing the bolt mod makes it almost more hassle than just buying one that is already bolt modded, but hopefully you'll get lucky and find someone locally that will do it!

Re: Overall opinions on the IBM model M2

The most legendary Mexico manufactured Model M's are the black M13's, so there should be quite a few people who have used those. I find all model M's seem to vary quite a bit from each other in terms of feel and sound even if they were manufactured in the same month/year by the same manufacturer. If...

Re: Northgate Omni Key 102 Gold Label (gold keyboard)

I've used reptiglo 10.0 fluorescent tubes which are supposed to put off a decent amount of UV and just submerged the casein the hydrogen peroxide. The trick is that the edges don't get very good light to them though and trying to shine through a clear container from the side I don't think works beca...

I presume the blockers can be removed and a couple more switches installed? Might require some remapping, but hopefully they'd produce scan codes at least? Or is such a modification considered sacrilege?

Re: Replacing Space Cadet Keycaps?

You might want to post pics of the boards and where the caps are missing from. You should be able to find a Honeywell hall effect keycap with the same profile, then hand paint it. I don't think 3D printing will beat this option in terms of quality and it would certainly cost less. Just my 2¢ ;-)

Re: Add honing bumps/pips to F and J keycaps?

I've seen some people use thick stickers, kind of like that embossing material that's used with certain labelers and those seem to work pretty well without any modification to the keycaps themselves.

Your best bet would be to just get them off of an existing model M controller, ideally one that doesn't work. You may be able to get one for the cost of shipping if another member has one. I think all my model M controllers work though.

The other thing you could do is use a model M spacebar and just use a Dremel to make the diameter of the stabilizer wire smaller just where it goes under the retaining clips so that it fits. Never seen anyone do this, but I see no reason why you couldn't.

I like the idea, but I think the sound will vary a lot based on typing style and mic placement. Not sure how Chyros puts h...

I almost think that using XT's for their barrels/hammers isn't a total crime especially since no parts are actually destroyed and you could aways rebuild the XT from the parts again. Definitely think it makes sense to reuse the back plate, so really all you'd need is the PCB, barrel plate, and Xwhat...
