Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread

There are so many things to love about this board, but the switches are definitely not among its strengths. They are way too scratchy, but I was surprised how low-profile they are, in particular by the "standards" of the early '80s. The toggle switches on top look and feel nice though. Here is a po...

Definitely Robotron — Siemens put such top-hat caps only on low-profile switches.

Supposed to be an old Siemens keyboard. Any guess on use-case and switches? Did you get any more info on this keyboard? I found a similar looking one, but with some extra keys top right. Siemens.jpg Unfortunately not :? That's a Siemens T1000 teletypewriter keyboard. We had a similar one rather ear...

Linear switches in a keyboard that was found lying outside a textile factory. The keyboard appears to have been part of a computerised weaving machine, and I can't find anything about the switches that it uses. Has anyone seen them before? Two old siemens boards with STB 21 switches and AT compatibility for any Swedish buyers. Thank you for sharing this. The field programmer board on the lower image is quite interesting - you rarely find them offered with case and cable. Beware of the other one, though. It's not easy with this style ...

A Siemens keyboard of unknown model. Uses Siemens's STB switches. That's a Siemens TA-BS/1200 teletypewriter keyboard. There seem to be quite a number of variants of it. This one is not in the overview photo not because it's not worthy; it's simply TOO BIG. A stage light controller apparently, with...

Re: Why modern keyboard feel and look horrible compare to the beige era keyboard?

Prices were steeply falling also for original parts. Prices from the 1990ies already cannot really be compared with those from the mid 1980ies. In 1996, you paid for a new 102-key IBM-labelled model M just about half the price of 1986; adjusted for inflation it actually was just about a third of the...

Re: Why modern keyboard feel and look horrible compare to the beige era keyboard?

I showed some parts catalogs of IBM terminals in my Model F review - prices for several Models F were shown in that price list, and they numbered in the $300-400+ range. That list was from 1984 iirc. The average IBM-keyboard shop prices I posted in the other thread correspond to about $ 300 in 1986...

No need to rewire. You only need to make a ps2 to usb converter and modify its software to swallow the 0x80 prefix and remap the code following it. For instance, you could use Hasu's code, https://github.com/tmk/tmk_keyboard, and change the matrix_scan function in converter/ps2_usb/matrix.c accordin...

What it means exactly is that if one of the extra keys is pressed, the keyboard first sends scan code 0x80 and then the specific code for the key. For instance, the make code for "COMPOSE CHR" is the sequence 0x80, 0x1D. The 0x80 prefix gets ignored; hence, Switch Hitter sees only 0x1D and thinks it...

The 8048 wasn't programmable; hence, it doesn't show up in compatibility lists. The ROM bits were hardwired - created by photolithography along with the other transistors on the chip. Siemens boards with STB switches usually have doubleshot caps, not lasered ones. Like this one,

There have been exceptions to that rule, but chances are low for this style of board.
