Re: ALPS/ALPS-like switch weaknesses
Do they permanently self-destruct, though? The one time a white alps switch popped apart while I was pulling a cap, I was able to re-assemble it without even removing it from the plate. Again, never had a Matias. It's also a shame that I've not had a chance to try "Monterey Blues" (SMK). If the Mat...

Re: ALPS/ALPS-like switch weaknesses
For what it's worth, the only time I've had an SKCM switch fail to register reliably (Home key on an AEK with oranges), just using it regularly for a couple weeks after picking the board up fixed the problem on its own. Also, while I can understand how a board stored in an attic might have dirt issu...

Re: Alps Appreciation
Yeah, the portable PC feels lighter and smoother than a NOS Ortek with white Alps. (Itself looks like an Apple keyboard clone. And it still feels good, but stiffer.) The keycaps are like that only on this keyboard, that I know of. Could the ortek be one of the later ones? (Could this be the fabled ...

Re: Alps Appreciation
The Portable PC III keyboards are interesting. I have one with white alps that feels nicer than another NOS one. Not sure how that works. Nicer than another Portable PC III NOS board? Or just another white alps board in general? Probably an older model than yours, as it has a more AT-like layout. I...

Re: Alps Appreciation
Hi. I only post on here once every few years, but I just got a new (to me) board with white alps switches that I think is interesting. It came with a Compaq Portable III clone (like, a clone of the compaq) and uses what looks to be Tai-Hao style injection moulded keycaps... except the numpad zero ke...

Re: IBM FSSK Build Log
Nice project; I'm going to do this myself so I appreciate being able to see what others have done. That way I know what I might be getting into! I had an fssk, it was amazing no issues whatsoever. Now hoping someone will get to building a pcb for the new Mini M! Does the mini M differ enough to warr...

Re:
Here are the very final files that I have sent to "pcbway". I just hope that they used this version that I submitted via email after the order was made, I added some instructions in the bottom silk layer to clarify that the pads were only in the connector. The zip contains the deltacad, diptrace an...

Re: IBM Model M 1386303
Hey, I'm sorry to bump this thread, but I have a 1386303 (and the IBM terminal it's meant for), so I can shed some more light on this than already has been in this thread. You're right about pretty much everything you said, first of all. The keycaps are likely original; IBM's successors to this init...

what's 'meh' about it? how would it compare to, say, mitsumi mechanicals like the m0110/m0110a apple keyboards have? My only other mitsumi switch experience is with miniature mechanicals found in the tandy 1400LT. Are they linear switches? If they were the same things used in the commodore 64/vic-20...

Nintendo Famicom Family Basic Keyboard - What's it like?
Hi, I'm considering buying a Famicom BASIC keyboard. The Famicom was the Japanese version of the NES, and there was a special cartridge and peripheral you could use to write BASIC programs on your famicom. If you had the cassette deck you could even save your programs to it, in home computer style :...

I suggest ordering an F77. The F77 is approximately an SSK-sized Model F keyboard, just without the function keys being separate keys. You can make it look like my attached photo or make the right side's 15 keys be like the layout of an SSK (Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause, Insert/Del/etc., cursor...

Eh, I've looked into the space saver. I'd like one, but unless I stumble on one in real life (where it may actually be priced sanely), I'm going to consider this better for my own sake (and my wallet's sake) :\ I don't really mind the numpad, anyway. And yeah, this was my parents' phone. I got it fr...

IBM 3161 Terminal & Model M 1386303, the original enhanced keyboard
Hi, there. Last november I went to a HAM radio convention (HAMfest) and found this very nice little IBM terminal, for $18 (USD): http://i.imgur.com/fIqm6Fu.jpg I knew nothing about it at the time, but after getting home I looked it up, and learned this is an IBM 3161 ASCII Display Station (terminal)...
