Definitely. Many sellers describe a keyboard as clicky if it makes a sound when the keys are pressed, lol. The descriptions are often not to be trusted.

Would a Bigfoot case work also? Due to the massive overhang on the Bigfoot, it probably wouldn't be very stable against wrist pressure if sized like the one shown in my project. However, if you deepen the block to extend to the front edge of the Bigfoot case and then add some feet to it so that it ...

The sharp edges caught my attention, so I rounded the corners and front of the support block with the router. While the piece was out, it also received a coat of paint. Now it matches the top much better. ;)

I realize that this is a very old thread, but since it may help others in the future, I'll relate that I had the same experience with my 8032. It also had the flickering leds and nonresponsive keys. What worked for me was to just swap the main controller chip from a similar vintage Model M controlle...

... almost a natural fit (the stepped keys, specially the triple-high + one, ruin the illusion a bit, IMHO). A Model F AT . Get a Model F AT in the 5251 case and THAT will be the perfect Cousin Itt. Interesting idea, but as it turns out, the AT internals are just a little wider and won't fit withou...

Magnificent work. And, dare I say... the XT on a DisplayWriter case (this... uh... conjoined twin to the Frankenbeam-XT) looks quite imposing and almost a natural fit (the stepped keys, specially the triple-high + one, ruin the illusion a bit, IMHO). Have you thought of a name for this XT-on-steroi...

Franken-Beam XT mod for the 5251 Beamspring

Of all the various beamspring iterations, many prefer the layout of the 5251 because it is similar to the original XT layout, and some may argue, even a tad more usable. Since I had been using my 5251 naked (without the white whale case) for a while, I decided to see what could be done about making ...

Maybe it's just me, but I find that having a couple of Beamsprings lying around is always a good idea. For example, you never know when you might need a mobile keyboard to use with your tablet. :-D

Those two IDs are the keyboard or component part numbers. Unless explicitly stated, the best way to determine an approximate date is probably by the four-digit shop date on a particular component: https://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/slom-breaks-stuff-today-taking-apart-an-ibm-5251-t16261-30.html#p...

that 5251 is probably not even from the 1970's either. Since we're talking Beamsprings, does anyone know how these can be accurately dated? The sticker found on the bottom (if not missing as this one is) appears to give the date code starting with the two digit year. The second group of numbers I w...

The secondary legends on the 1 and 6 keys should probably be ! and ^ instead of what they are currently. Thank you for being the first to mention one of my silly easter eggs! I am a bit suspicious of cleaned alps switches. Because it means they were compelled to clean out the switches that they thought were scratchy and you cant take the scratchyness from alps. Same on the mounting plate. Why did it need to be sandblasted unless it was crusty and rusty to begin with? Th...

What would be better about this material? Art foam at Michael's is made for scrapbooking and is acid-free, and you can do a 122 or 2 XT/ATs out of a $1 sheet. Personally, I like the firmness and texture of the closed-cell foam, even though IBM used open-cell foam originally. Admittedly, the firm cl...

I can understand the concern, but we all know that lot_lizard is a busy guy. Sometimes he has to jet off to remote places lacking decent internet service, so he can be incommunicado for a while. I wouldn't be too worried that he's ended up hanging with Soarer or anything just yet. :-)
