Re: IBM Model F XT restoration (Work in Progress; lots of images)

I had good luck with my first XT restoration. I used 1/8-inch thick silicone foam for the foam replacement. This resulted in all the keys registering properly, but it was very difficult to get the plates to slide into position. I had to get a heavy-duty clamp and use considerable force. It was also ...

Re: Recommendation (Tactile switches board)

Hey @Hypersphere thanks for this! I just ordered a black on black Realforce 87U (the one with 55g). I had heard of realforce but hadn't really considered it, thanks for the recommendation. Got it on sale too, at 186 EUR. From the reviews I saw it sounds like it will be pretty much what I'm looking ...

Re: Connecting a Model M to a Macintosh Computer

I found my IBM Model M 42H1292 and connected it to my mid-2012 Macbook Air with an Adesso PS/2 to USB active converter. The MBA set up the keyboard with no problem. BTW, I am running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6. I tried it with and without being connected to AC power, and I tried both USB connectors ...

@Hypersphere, thanks for the report.
You don't need post both forum. Use thread on Geekhack for USB-USB converter related topic.
Okay. I mostly visit DT these days and visit GH very rarely. However, per your request, I will post USB-USB converter issues on the GH thread for this topic.

Re: TMK keyboard firmware collection

@hasu: I've been using your splendid USB-USB converter with my new RF R2 TKL PFE Edition keyboard. It works fine, but when I reboot my Win 10 computer, I then have to unplug the converter from the computer and replug it in order for the keyboard to function. Is this normal for the USB-USB converter...

Re: Connecting a Model M to a Macintosh Computer

@Libretto Simpatico: Welcome to DT! I have successfully used both the "Blue Cube" and the Adesso active PS/2 to USB adapter/converters with an IBM Model M keyboard and Mac computers. I just did a search for the Blue Cube, and it appears to be no longer available. However, the Adesso is available, al...

Re: Recommendation (Tactile switches board)

@PirateGamARRR: Welcome to DT! Many of us here also like keyboard switches with a high degree of tactility. Here are some of my thoughts: 1. Greatest tactility that I have experienced in a keyboard: IBM 5140 "luggable" computer. The keyboard has SKCM Brown Alps switches. Very heavy and prounounced t...

@Matt3o: We already have categories for "Spy" and "My posts". Would it be possible to add a new category for "My threads"? Re: Alps Appreciation

@Wasrach: I think that my Zenith with yellow Alps that I click-modded was a 163-73 rather than a ZKB-2. The 163-73 accepts a Soarer's converter with no problem. I think that the ZKB-2 should also work with a Soarer's, especially if it is in AT mode. The Z-150 is the one that definitely does not work...

@//gainsborough: Thanks for the additional details. That Northgate spacebar is noticeably whiter than the other caps. Re: [WTB] 100x blue Alps or blue Alps keyboard

@cli: I agree with your assessment of the relative merits of various types of Alps switches. SKCM white (pine) switches in excellent condition and in a good chassis provide a superb typing experience. It can also be fun and rewarding to make hybrid Alps switches. This is relatively easy to do, becau...

Re: Questioning the lubing of switches

If you use liquid lube and if dirt then gets inside the switch, it could become suspended in the lube and act as an abrasive. Alps switches are more sensitive than Cherry mx (or its clones) to dirt. For Alps switches, many people recommend using a dry lube such as quick-drying suspensions of teflon ...
