If you're bothered by high pitched sound, consider moving to taller plastic or wooden case. I know (especially plastic) it's not blingy and cosher, but who cares. It's all about feels and sound, right?

Not sure what OS you're using, but on Mac it would be pretty easy with any MIDI controller and software called ControllerMate (actually program I miss most when using other systems than Mac) that allows you to map any input to any output. That means you can map any key on a keyboard, mouse, game con...

Poppieness. One where the mechanical action matches the electronic action. A keyboard switch is not a pressure sensitive gamepad button, it's 100% digital: on or off. Therefore the best switch is either up or down and nothing inbetween. One where it doesn't move at all until you apply the necessary...

Just for this reason that Topre feels so familiar for someone who only used rubber domes in their life, I would go with something different, explicitly feeling mechanical, like Cherry or Matias. Of course not proper Alps as it would be archeological challenge to find 100+ decently feeling keyboards ...

While we're at springs. Are they going to be aligned the same way as original IBMs? You know like all springs rotated to the same angle. Not sure if you ever noticed it but I love that attention to detail - probably improves consistency too. 20170330_110524.jpg Notice the spring coils ending always ...

And what makes a good non sweet food? Very personal and everyone will have different view on that. One will be happy with a tiny bit of tactility provided by Cherry MX Brown, others will like huge bump forcing you to bottom out present in Rubber Domes (and of course Topre), and some will hate that b...

For portable use I'm mostly fine with standard 60% in HHKB or derivative layout.
If I had to add something to it, as a long time Vimmer, first thing would actually be dedicated ESC and function keys row, rather than numpad or navigation cluster.

OK? I have never encountered any Alps that didn't bind on off-centre key presses. Me too. The only complicated Alps that felt decent were in NIB Dell AT 101. All other Alps keyboards I had (or still have), like AEKs, Focuses, and other Dells felt either totally crap, or in case of very old white Al...

Of course. Housings and springs are exactly the same in MX Blue and Silent MX Red, so if you replaced stems, you'd end up with basically Silent Reds :)

Well you can go very low end and connect all rows and columns to some GPIO port of a controller (or even stupid IO expander), then maybe I2C over serial to the host computer. It would require a driver that would be doing matrix scanning though, but it would give 100% control over keyboard to the dri...

Oh definitely. Matching keycaps to switches is very important. And it doesn't mean you always go for PBT dye subs, or double shots, cherry profile vs OEM, or DSA, or SA. That means you can make an awesome switch (like Topre) feel crap by putting thin pad printed OEM profile ABS keycaps on it. Same w...
