MX2A

Cherry announced their latest revision of Cherry MX tooling: on their blog today. The new thing is that the springs are now barrel-shaped and lubed with a lubricant "on par with GPL 205". They announce 100M actuations and eight guiderails as something new, and not the normal manufacturing standard t...

Re: NeXT level miscategorisation

Done. I suspect that a search for "NeXT" could have got trapped because it was on a list of common words ... but I dunno. I added links to a non-existed "NeXT Computer" page, that should be about the company . Apparently it had the official name "Next Computer, Inc" at some time, and that two-word t...

Re: 8bitdo Retro Mechanical Keyboard

I believe that most Japanese keyboards are based around the ISO layout. So, it might have been more appropriate for the Famicom model to be ISO. Most Japanese keyboards are based on the JIS layout , which has the same type of Enter/Return key as ISO layout, but a lot of differences: split Backspace...

Re: 8bitdo Retro Mechanical Keyboard

It looks weird that they put a Commodore bread-bin VIC-20/64 - style Power LED on an item that is otherwise NES-themed. For comparison: C64 , 8BitDo . I like the overall shape of the keyboard and the features with the dials on the top left, but I didn't grow up with a NES/Famicom so I don't have any...

Re: DZ65RGB underglow mod

Are they individually addressable LEDs or are they part of a LED matrix, driven by a LED driver chip? If a LED driver, you could find the chip on the board (or the QMK source for the DZ64RGB) and then look up its documentation to see what the voltages is produces. LEDs in LED matrices are typically ...

Re: DZ65RGB backlight mod

What you're describing is called "underglow", "side-glow" or "side-lighting". "Backlighting" is what the PCB already has. I wonder if there exists a type of LED in the right size with reverse pinout to the LEDs already installed. Then it should be possible to desolder some backlight LEDs and replace...

Have there been any mods to it to it to make it work with a modern computer?

I would inspect the solder joints to the controller, to see if perhaps two pads have been bridged.

I think I've seen some kind of hollow, threaded cylinder (kind of like a hollowed out screw) that you can screw the screw into and lock it into place (sorry for the terrible explanation). Like these ? More common in hardware stores are spacers without any threading though. There are also "rivet nut...

Does QMK or other open firmware have hooks or APIs for LED control? I’ve never owned a LED board but it would be cool to customize it. I haven't followed QMK's source code for a few years, but there used to be several instances for specific LED driver chips. The QMK firmware for the Input.Club K-Ty...

The other problem with the inverted-T is the "cramp factor." It's painful to use. If I understand you correctly, you are complaining that it is on the bottom row . That's not the fault of the inverse-T itself but of where IBM had relocated it. The original inverse-T on the DEC LK201 had the cluster...

I'd think it would be interesting for something with curved key-wells, such as a variant of Dactyl.

I think I've also seen a row-staggered prototype keyboard with MX switches on a curved backplane made up of metal plate strips (but I couldn't find it right now).

Three buttons would have been more common on a Unix workstation. One rarely sees optical mice of that vintage. I never came across them, but some of the early ones required a special mouse pad with a metal grid in it. I think that type from Mouse Systems is most closely associated with workstations...

It does not matter. You can connect row-switch-diode-column or row-diode-switch-column. You can choose any two pins on the switch. The only thing to worry about is that the diode is connected the right way round, so that it lets current through in the right direction . Bonus question. The following ...

That looks like a keyboard for the NEC PC-9801.
There were many revisions though. This seems to have a gap between the Return key and nav keys, whereas some PC-9801 keyboards don't. And some keyboards have more keys.

Yeah, that looks like it was damaged with water or acid or something ... A "solder-sucker" while the solder is being heated with the soldering iron is usually what is used to get solder from a hole. If the holes can't be used, alternatives available here are to replace a diode with a surface-mount d...
