Re: A question for the keyboard collectors, who also collect terminals

Thank you for your input. It doesn't sound so easy after all. Especially for someone like me - with very limited electronical skills.
This together with the size of the piece and the problems with transporting it has brought me to my senses and I think I better back away from that plan.

A question for the keyboard collectors, who also collect terminals

Hi, I'm thinking about buying an IBM 5251 terminal/screen for my existing 5251 keyboard. I wonder, will this be only a decoration piece or would it be possible to get any kind of interaction between the terminal und the keyboard (without the actual computer behind it). For example: Will some charact...

Re: Navless IBM AT layout mechanical keyboard

I understand your father only too well. Noticing that there are still options for keyboards without that horrid nav cluster restarted my interest in keyboards not too long ago. You can reprogram the Vibe to that classic numpad-arrow-mode (which I also prefer), but you have to use a few tricks and yo...

Re: Finally a proper case for the Vortex ViBE

Thanks a lot.

Concerning typing demo: I tried that already, but - just as with den Model F XT videos, I did some time ago - it sounds very, very reverberating. No matter, if I use my photo-camera or an iPhone. That doesn't do it justice.
(Maybe I'll try a different setup ....)

Finally a proper case for the Vortex ViBE

The layout of the Vortex ViBE is pretty much perfect for me. After starting with a MX brown version, I changed to silent reds and in the end I took the first board and replaced the MX browns with lubed Healios. The only thing missing now was a proper case. I've never been a fan of the "caseless" flo...

Not all Apple keyboards are useless.
The case of the M0110A has the perfect size for a Vortex ViBE (by this time - with lubed Healios switches).

Re: [EU] Model F's: 4704 F107, AT. Beamspring?

I have a few Model F XTs. All thoroughly cleaned and working. Some floss-modded and one with modded spacebar. Keycaps in German and US.
If a price around 100 € would be ok, I could make a more detailed list.

Re: Repairing Model F badges

Taking off that protective film is the most satisfying finale of every keyboard restoration.
Only once it happened to me that a little bit of the print got off together with the film.
(Maybe warming it up with a hair dryer could have prevented that?)

I quite like it too. And judging by the wrinkles, it's only wrapped with film - so certainly reversible.

Re: Alternate history: what the Enhanced layout could have been if...

I think the design process should have happened when the Model F AT had been designed. With only a few minor tweaks, it could have been better and the the Model M layout would not have been necessary. That's the best suggestion so far. (Although even there you have changed more than necesarry.) Fro...

Re: tapwithus "keyboard"

That 60 wpm with this device seems pretty difficult. It's a tap for each letter so we are talking about 250 "precise" taps in a minute. I would guess you need a lot more taps than one for each letter. How else would you type 26 diffent letters + numbers and special characters with only 5 fingers? I...

Re: Need help with IBM Model F soarers converter configuration

Ah, ok, sorry, the Alt/Ctrl key seems to create some chatter. So it's often good to include some "DELAY" after the PUSHING/CLEARING of METAs. I've also changed it, so that the characters come repeatedly, if you hold the key: remapblock FAKE_02 LALT # extra pad lhs of space FAKE_04 RALT # extra pad r...

No problem. Since I don't use the Model F as a daily driver, it's nice to get it out from time to time for some macro programming. remapblock FAKE_02 LALT # extra pad lhs of space FAKE_04 RALT # extra pad rhs of space FAKE_05 EUROPE_1 # extra pad lhs of enter FAKE_06 BACKSLASH # extra pad top of ent...

Re: IBM 5251 Beam Spring Restoration

There is a plastic sheet between the plate and PCB with the same groove pattern so that it fits the plate perfectly, that sheet is there for insulation, protection and to press the PCB uniformly against the switches. I suppose the groove pattern is there for better fitting of that plastic sheet. Ca...

Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

@Ander The holes themselves are quite precise, because they're made with a hole punch (in my case not in the "perfect" size 15 mm, because I couldn't find a tool in that size - instead I used 16 mm). The placement of the holes isn't actually very precise. Mainly because the markings, which I made th...

Re: Model F XT "small sticker" dating

That's an interesting subject. I have mostly UK-made Model Fs, where the stickers are a lot clearer in that respect. With US-made ones it seems to be very difficult. Even the big stickers - shown in the youtube video - don't show the correct shop date, I think. Most of them show "dates" in the 90s, ...

A /deViBE/tty double

Finally I could finish the second Vortex ViBE with /dev/tty caps in "Beige". Re: Need help with IBM Model F soarers converter configuration

So I've tested it with my Model F XT now and it works fine. I don't think it matters if it's an AT or XT in this case. In your post you left out the first line "macroblock". But that can't be the reason, because then the error message would complain about line 1 or 2 and not 20. But is there really ...

I didn't get my Model F "out of storage" to test it, but this should be the necessary commands for the programing of the keys 1 - 4. I couldn't find any key codes for fast forward or rewind, though.
