Re: Why do you need foam on your model f?
I bought another xt off of ebay that I got really lucky with and it has prestine foam. I cant say if it is just that or the lack of rust/cleaner in general, but it feels much smoother and the tactility is much more pronounced. typing on the board with no foam feels almost linear. The sound is much m...

Re: What's this IBM floss mod I keep seeing mentioned?
You put floss in the springs of your board and it reduces the pinging. it's not the same as what you did

Re: Whats up with my model f xt? Two layers of foam?
There was a couple of small scratches on both sides of the clip it was maybe opened but i'm not sure. I made a typing test here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQoBGNrdl2w it sounds very similar to my board that had no foam maybe a little more bassier.

Re: Whats up with my model f xt? Two layers of foam?
I'm sure that atleast the top case was re painted. the thing for the feet wire is white. How do you know for sure that someone didn't put new foam in? is there some give away that it is original foam?

Re: Whats up with my model f xt? Two layers of foam?
You got really lucky with that. I've seen a few examples of good foam, in fact, this new old stock IBM 5155 Model F XT has pristine foam in it. ;) This has deliciously thick, yet slightly fuzzy legends btw. It also has a pleasant new old plastic smell which is fading the more I use it. :( Enjoy you...

Re: Whats up with my model f xt? Two layers of foam?
That's not new foam, you are just very lucky that the foam has kept well over the years. The stuff US Models F use seems to hold up much better than the white-skinned foam in all three UK Models F XT I have opened, which was completely disintegrated in each of them. That is also not a second layer ...

Whats up with my model f xt? Two layers of foam?
I bought this off of eBay for 60 bucks and shipping because I thought it was too good of a deal not to and I was in a spending mood. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IBM-Model-F-Personal-Computer-Mechanical-Clicky-Keyboard-XT/173932478857?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 It...

Re: Redmaus Megasale
This is one of the sets I received. Not cleaned or anything. https://i.imgur.com/J8JtPx0.jpg I may be a little biased but sharp and clean lettering on f's looks super nice. In my experience with the US models, the lettering is quite thick and bold - but slightly fuzzy. Slightly. The UK ones appear ...

Just how clean are the legends on those XT modules? only issue with mine is the "smudged" legends, although an unused module certainly wouldn't hurt. This is one of the sets I received. Re: Why do you need foam on your model f?
I can't think of another reason why the boards feel like shit after putting them together. I'm going to assume the hammering apart and hammering back into place is what's possibly bending the metal and intorducing an inconsistent feel to the board. It's driving me nuts. It wasn't as bad on the firs...

Re: Why do you need foam on your model f?
I have no foam on one of my Model Fs. The keyboard works and sounds great. https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21888&p=444524&hilit=model+f+xt+restoration#p444524 When compared to the another Model F I own, that does have a foam, the sound on the one without a foam is slightly more pingy. Re: Why do you need foam on your model f?
Foam is extremely important. Every Model F is different in terms of feel and sound, but generally you can tell straight away when the foam is bad. Several UK Model F XTs I've bought all had a type of foam with a white "skin" on one side, but this variety always disintegrates with age. With two of t...

Re: Why do you need foam on your model f?
The main purpose of the foam is to stop the key barrels from wobbling because if they wobble the flippers can become dislodged meaning you will lose the click and the switches will stop functioning. I would just make a new mat its really easy. get some 3mm neoprene foam and some leather hole punche...

Why do you need foam on your model f?
I just spent the good part of the day restoring my model f xt. I took it apart and the foam was terrible. Super sticky and barely even there. I took it out and cleaned everything off, the only problem was that I don't have any spare foam so I tried to do it without any foam and see what happened. Wh...

Re: Repairing Model F badges
Taking off that protective film is the most satisfying finale of every keyboard restoration. Only once it happened to me that a little bit of the print got off together with the film. (Maybe warming it up with a hair dryer could have prevented that?) it was not satisfying at all. The film was stuck...

Re: Converting Pingmaster
Your wiring is correct and it seems you flashed the firmware fine since the computer is recognizing it. Hasu's docs say that a pull up resistor may be needed. So certainly could be a reason. First thing I would check is whether the chips on the keyboard are getting power. Do you have a multimeter? ...
