Re: Longterm Daily Drivers

I don't have nearly the number of boards that some people have, nor are mine particularly exotic, but I've always come back to my Model M boards. I got my first full size 1988 Model M 16 years ago, and picked up a mint 1993 SSK about a year ago - the big Model M was basically my daily driver until I...

Re: New F77 or a Unicomp?

It's just weird that they went with a Chinese company. It's not like even being twice as expensive would have hurt sales on this thing. Why even raise the question? I know GOOD Chinese manufacturing is good (see: Eastman Guitars) but bad Chinese manufacturing is baaaaaaaaaad to the point that it dr...

Re: New F77 or a Unicomp?

I think the FUD over "questionable Chinese machining" in the repro F's may be misplaced. AFAIK a big part of the long lead time is Ellipse being super anal about tolerances before accepting parts.

Re: New F77 or a Unicomp?

I have an F77 on order but would definitely recommend going Unicomp if you have not tried either and care about typing feel and price and not looks or build quality. No, they won't feel exactly the same, but there's a reason the Model M is still regarded as the 'classic' outside of very niche keyboa...

Re: [IC] IBM Doubleshot Key Cap Set Group Buy?

I feel like there must be interest in doubleshot spherical buckling spring keycaps. It's a completely untapped market, even if it's niche. I think maybe the problem here is confusion about what is being offered and questions about quality, as well as not many people seeing it. Then again, I'm not a ...

LOL. I worked in deskside IT during that era of Mac keyboards. I still shiver thinking about it. Pretty sure I knew what color body hair every single one of my users had, after seeing their keyboards after 1+ months of use.

Just to set expectations, this forum tends to focus on vintage keyboards (or at least vintage technology keyboards) and tends not to be into any keyboard that might be mistaken for a Christmas tree. Not that there's anything wrong with Christmas trees :)

Maybe this is a crazy idea, but what if a bunch of members pooled their money, and it became a member owned site? Would probably require a bit of bureaucracy to work out, maybe electing a representative of the 'owners' or something. Could see that ending in chaos and disaster, but also could see it ...

Got the shipping notice last week, so I'm a little hesitant about receiving the F77. It's one of those purchases that goes down as a future investment when this whole man...

Was the VT100 keyboard really great or am I just experiencing nostalgia?

Back when I was a kid, our local library had VT100 terminals for looking up books and other information. This was late 80's until at least the mid 90's. At the time I didn't think much about them, as they already seemed kind of antiquated, but I do distinctly remember the very satisfying, solid feel...

There's nothing wrong with that but what are _you_ looking for in a keyboard? What will you be using it for? Do you want something great for typing, or gaming, or something in between? Do you like heavy keys, or light ones? Do you want a quiet keyboard, or something that makes a satisfying click? Do...

I've never bolt/screw modded either of my M's, one is a 1989 unit I've used almost daily since 2005, the other is an almost NOS 1993 SSK. Both have a handful of rivets missing but I can't detect any problems in actual functionality or feel. Also, after reading about various issues with keyboards not...

Not being snarky, just honestly curious - why is it that this keyboard seems to need per-computer parameter tweaking to get keys registering and properly debouncing, when... well, pretty much no other keyboard I've heard of requires this? What is it that makes it so finicky?
