Re: Alps Appreciation

Mu is right. Find a board with tactile Alps (brown, orange, salmon, white damped, cream damped, black — in roughly that order of preference IMO, but don’t worry too much about it) and look to spend between £30-£100. That budget will get you a full board of all but browns and oranges, but condition i...

Re: Experimenting with a RISC-V controller

If you rotate the MCU back instead of rotating it 45 degrees then it looks like it might just fit. It’ll require some clever routing, but maybe?

Re: Beam Spring 104+SSK Reproduction Project! First Batch In Stock, Shipping early next year after New Model F Project

Regarding keycap colors the minimum order quantity is 1,000 sets per color scheme, which is why there are only two color schemes (total 2,000 key sets). Understandable, though if the quality is as good as I have come to expect from your products, I wouldn’t be too surprised if you could sell anothe...

Proxy/help needed, Malaysia

I have found a keyboard I would like to buy on the Carousell marketplace, but it seems you can’t contact sellers unless you have a verified +60 number, which is a bit annoying.

Is there a DT user from Malaysia who would be willing to help me make an offer on a keyboard?

Re: Alps Appreciation

Yes, the shipping makes it a bit silly. If the goal is to try Alps then it should be pretty easy to find a decent Alps board locally, maybe an AEKII or a Dell AT101, or even something more high end. Paying £30 for international shipping is a bit wasteful when you can probably get a great Alps board ...

It is a 9500900. The white Alps are pretty good but not perfect — which I guess is a pretty good example of the typical Alps experience:-D

Re: Alps Appreciation

I was digging around in the part of my keyboard collection that’s been boxed up for years and found a Silicon Graphics “Bigfoot” granite with white (damped?) Alps that I originally bought to use the keycaps in my SKCM Brown TKL; but as I eventually wound up using the Signature Plastics DSA Granite ...

Is the site code on Github? I could take a stab at it myself if you’re open to pull requests. Of course this assumes I somehow find half an hour to do it between work, toddlers and keyboard sales

Re: New Alps Restoration Method

I’ve not tried this method, but I’ve done my fair share of sanding stuff - wood, metal, plastic, leather, denim (don’t ask), stone, even the odd bit of ceramic. And if this were any other sanding job, and someone told me to just keep vigorously sanding for thirty solid minutes rather than go grab a ...

Any chance of a pic of all the legends? If there's a µ on the M key, consider it sold. :D Sorry to derail the thread, but if you are interested in Mu caps I have these… both those keysets are from ISO-DE G81s and each one has a keycap with a stem broken off inside it, so I’d basically written them ...

Re: Tactile Board Suggestions

I wonder if I should update my switch collection with a set of new-tooling Matias switches. I have never used a Matias keyboard and I can’t speak to their build quality, so all I have to go on are loose switches from five or so years ago, and those feel not-great and the slider stem holes (wait, is ...

Re: Alps SKCM Brown and Alps in general

Amber Omrons (“Omnoms” among friends) are gloriously clicky, it’s true - if you like a pronounced and somewhat heavy tactile event (a la brown Alps) then Omnoms are one of the most satisfying clickies in both keyfeel and sound (in fact, in my opinion, until Kailh box switches with click bars came ou...

Re: Alps Wax Mod

I was experimenting with waxboiling Alps lately, and I have a few notes: 1. Make sure you get the right candle wax. I tried tea lights made with 100% candle wax and I got gummy results that had to be redone. This was partally due to overwaxing, but I tried some paraffin based tea lights next and ach...

Re: Alps SKCM Brown and Alps in general

Matias makes a clone of the “simplified” Alps switch, though most (all) enthusiasts would say that the simplified Alps were far inferior to the “complicated” Alps of the SKCM/SKCL series, and the Matias switches are plasticy and a poor substitute for vintage Alps. So yes, desolder or buy them from s...

Re: Tactile Board Suggestions

I’m a tactile fan myself and if you’re looking to get a quiet tactile experience I have to second the Topre recommendation, 45g for a subtle tactility or 55g for a satisfying yet not tiring tactility — coming from a Model M the 55g Topres should suit your fingers well. In the vintage category I don’...

Re: Keyboard Tinker Work Bench Gallery

I love this!!! We bought our first house three years ago and I immediately set up a workshop in the cellar — I’ve never had the luxury of having a dedicated space where I could leave my tools and projects out, so this was a priority for me. Tool-wise, the woodworking station has an old Swedish carpe...

Following this thread now as I have some scratchy Alps boards in need of restoration. I have an ultrasonic cleaner and I can’t really see a reason why boiling would work any better than using the ultrasonic with 50-70 C water/cleaning solution, so that’s what I think I’ll use.

That’s great :-) I own two SSKs, one regular and a DisplayWriter (1392464), though one of them has had an LED mod which you might not like. I’ll post pictures of both when I can.
