And the 55g feel? Sufficiently sark's sphinctery for you? Or does it need some laxatives?

I finally have both 55gr and 45gr topres in da house. I hereby officially invite you to my place for as long as you please (up to 1 week) and try them both. For a guy who likes mx green I bet I know which one you'll like most :)

Oh, I think I know, too. But I couldn't resist going on topic for just a change!

The weird thing is I like MX red, too. The week I had 002's variable weight Realforce, I liked it a lot and didn't really notice the lighter (35g?) switches at the edges after the first day or so. Don't know if I'd go for a variable weighted keyboard, myself, as my touch typing is the hands flying around in the air style anyway. But Topre's high activation point is the star.

I seem to recall that the only 55gr key in the variable realforce is the ESC key. All others are 45, 40 or 35.

Talking about 45 g vs 55 g, I've noticed some subtle differences in the key caps between the versions. The 55 g had a substantially better dye sublimation on the lettering. Also, some of the legends are different, for example the 55 g version has a thicker, hollow Enter symbol whereas the 45 g has a thin arrow symbol on the key.

Topre had some issues with the alignment of the plastic parts of the switches themselves, I mean more than before. I think my 45 g was manufactured before this particular 55 g, and the 45 g uses some type of thick, white grease in some of the switches to compensate for key cap swivel, especially in the larger modifier keys. The grease doesn't affect overall switch feel much, but does somewhat prevent the key cap from wobbling around the switch axis. I guess as a temporary solution it is quite effective, but sending boards with the aforementioned fix to retail seems a little unfair considering the price of these boards. I really didn't pay for Good Feeling of Oneness with an Unknown Lubricant Substance. As far as I know, the 55 g didn't have this greasy fix nor did it have the key wobble problem.

There were rumors about Topre acquiring a new plastic moulds for their switch manufacturing line, but whether they did that last year or not, I don't know.

Topre's quality control isn't really so much better than anyone else's. The fact they make one of the most interesting switches currently available, and don't tend to bother making crap, is what makes them appealing. We expect the world from them because that's their asking price. But…

As for the variable weight Realforce I tried, yes, only the Escape key was 55g. So I couldn't tell much from that. What I mean, though, is that even the 45 / 40 / 35g switches weren't bothering me. I probably would prefer a uniform 55g to 45g, tested side by side, but I'm pretty agnostic about weight it seems. I'll bash or I'll tickle, whatever it takes.

My source is someone who got a tour of the Topre factory.

I thought at banks they use buckling springs to access their mainframe systems.

They need fussier robots. I nominate 7bit!

Is your 45g board the EK edition by any chance? I am pretty sure that Brian had Topre fix the legends on the EK edition which is why the Enter key and Back Space are different. I have an 87U variable at work and my friend has the EK edition and we see those differences.

As for the grease, I don't think there should be any difference here, maybe just one got a more liberal dose than another. I recall have a super wobbly left Ctrl key on my 55g (when I had it), and the reason for this is actually the flimsier slider that they have to use because it's an LED switch; like this:
