That forum is kinda dead. What did I miss? Did all the cool kids move to reddit or what?

about 6 months or so ago the owner of GH went and sold it to Massdrop and when that happened a number of splinter alternatives established themselves as they did not like massdrop owning GH

Oh, thanks for that, I had no idea. I’ll Google stuff further.

It's doesn't scroll as fast, but I'd hesitate to pronounce it 'dead'.

Yeah, the gimicky keyboards are all on Reddit. Reddit's an awful site anyway.

Websites have an ebb and flow, especially sites with a younger crowd.

They tend to dip around fall as kids go back to school and are settling in for the school year, then ramp up a little again around Christmas when they have time and some spending cash, then a slight dip again, then a slow build up through to fall. There may also be a large bump over summer depending on site content.

In other words, everything's normal, I don;t think the change of owners really changed much.

Was going to start a thread on this, but I will post it here.

So what forum alternatives cropped up? I know the Input Club started one, but were there any others? What is hot right now? Just wondering, I don't actually plan visiting them.

Also, I have not visit geekhack pretty at all since the sale. Just left a bad taste in my mouth. Meh.

Well, seeing as DT will soon be down a while as Matteo scarifies some limbs and scares some hens, it’s a good moment to point to Trev’s place:

I am so out of the loop during a time I would like to become a bit active to complete some projects.

There are many discords and slacks that took the place of it. I try to limit my use on either of those, as real-time doesn't work well for me.

Yea, I really don't have the time for that kind of stuff.

That's the Input Club/Kono/Norbauer one he referenced above. It was the kneejerk reaction to the GH buyout.

I think this started back when ctrlalt made their own slack, pre that all small talk between GH members happened on the IRC or in off-topic. Nowadays there are so many alternatives with quick communication like the r/mk discord, various slacks and niche forums like keebtalk etc. But I guess that's what happens when the hobby becomes more materialistic than being a community.

Geekhack already had a schism before this one--that's why Deskthority itself was created (if anyone has been around long enough to remember Webwit posting there). Then Ripster eventually got banned and went to Reddit, which is probably how the keyboard community there got kickstarted.

I will have to say reading Ripster and Webwit reply to one another on Geekhack was somewhat of a guilty pleasure. I remember in one of Ripster's troll posts he said this was Webwit showing off his datahand: http://www.shareware-beach.com/photos/J1302764.jpg

I'm just going to go back to my rocking chair now.
