the three tiers of Bass

:

tier 1, nice melody, can headbang to, easy to listen to

tier 2, plays fast, nice rhythm, main instrument, slaps harder than dads and sings about cats

tier 3, melody ? what's that ? speed ? what's that ? am I playing too slow ? too fast ? am I in rhythm ? am I getting in touch with other form of life ? what it happen ? did I break a string ? does it matter ? am I even playing music ???

I've recently listened to newer Ensiferum albums again (post From Afar) and discovered they have a new one out (Two Paths). I'm not a big fan of that direction, though. There are some catchy tracks, but the overall atmosphere seems lacking compared to especially the early self-titled album with Jari Mäenpää. And so I've looked closer at his project Wintersun. I love it.

Here's the latest album that was apparently crowdfunded; best enjoyed in one piece (and at Bandcamp, where there is an instrumental version as well):
