Going on a tangent here…

When I was in school, a friend listened to Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers etc. a lot, and called it "electronic music". I thought it was weird, because when someone said "electronic music", I imagined techno/house/dubstep, which sounded nothing like this. I've only recently learned that the genre is called "(big) beat".

Which makes it even more confusing, considering that popular Western genres like jazz or later rock were banned in the eastern bloc as "imperialist" or "bourgeois", thus it was called "big beat" in Central Europe instead, to avoid censorship. And so, a lot of especially older people still call rock "bigbít", the most popular rock radio station goes under the name "BEAT" etc.

Now, I've learned that in the Soviet Union, they officially called it "vocal and instrumental ensemble music", which covered almost everything from state-approved kitschy pop-rock to psychedelic rock. Some more famous examples:

I always wondered how people like Dunaj, Pavel Fatj and Iva Bittová (saw here live in Paris in the late 90's, amazing gig, I even recorded it) were considered in Czech Republic. Funny thing there is a Z Kopce record from 1989 called Big Beat, never heard it though

It's Dos-Mukasan in Latin [alphabet]. Unfortunately, most other stuff that I've heard from them isn't as good (unless you like that kind of [folk-]pop[-rock]).

About Czech music, well, what you've linked is avant-garde and sort of by definition outside mainstream. (Bittová is a sort of popular actress in a way, though.)

I guess one unusual thing was that plenty of musicians, who became successful state-approved pop singers during normalization, started with "bigbeat" bands, often playing progressive/art rock or covers of classic Western rock with (often very well) rewritten localized lyrics (which they often tried even later in their official production)—a couple of examples:

Marie Rottrová: Lásko voníš deštěm (Black Sabbath: She's Gone)

Jiří Schelinger: Šípková růženka (Deep Purple: Soldier of Fortune)

Meanwhile, others stayed more or less underground and typically got banned at some point.

And no, didn't really enjoyed Fou+Faye, except bits of the music on the second track music and the intro joke ahaha didn't know it.
