Winners of Deskthority Awards 2018!

This year's DTA were a little downsized but we had a lot fun anyway and we've got great nominations and greater winners!

The following are the nominations and winners for each category. Congrats to everyone, the winners (whenever possible) will be contacted to arrange the Wingnut delivery. If you don't hear from me or webwit please send me a PM.

Best Project or Innovation

Nominations:
- Afferscheim's homemade keypad
- The DMA's Common Sense Controller
- Hyper 7 build by jae-3soteric
- Bucis' gaming keypad
- UHKB
- sealclubber's 3d printed mammoth (sb147)

Winner: The DMA's Common Sense Controller

Image

The DMA's Common Sense Controller. While already being nominated last year I think it deserves another nomination. The inclusion of bluetooth (bluetooth model F and beamspring) and the topre controller makes it worth it for this year. Also DMA's dedication to the project is exceptional.

Best Vintage Keyboard or Relic

Nominations:
- Aer Fixus' IBM 3279 Beamspring Restoration
- ghostjuggernaut's gorgeous restored Kishsaver
- snucci's MCM/70 machine
- bass for his awesome IBM 5100 find
- ball00n's and Mindgame's SAV haul
- gainsborough's TI keyboards

Winner: Aer Fixus' IBM 3279 Beamspring Restoration

Image

Aer Fixus' IBM 3279 Beamspring Restoration. He took the beamspring that had been subject to horrors few other keyboards have suffered and restored it back to health.

Best Keycap or Keycaps Set

Nominations:
- XDA Canvas
- GMK Serika
- SA Oblivion
- GMK Olivia
- GMK Laser
- Cherry original doubleshots

Winner: Cherry original doubleshots (wingnut goes to nobody)

Image

the most sincere and least pretentious keycaps ever.

The Deskthority Award

Nominations:
- TGR
- Wilba
- QMK
- elecplus
- Findecanor
- iMav
- orihalcon
- NovelKeys
- clickclack
- Eiiti Wada

Winner: elecplus (gold wingnut)

The Prizes for the voters

Worry not, real soon we will randomly pick the winners of the sponsors' prizes among all the voters. Stay tuned!

---------------------

Unsolicited afterwords
As you may have noticed this year's awards were a little downsized. I did what I could to keep things smooth and easy. 2018 could have been a DTA-less year and I couldn't let that happen. Despite the reduced pace, organizing the DTA is a very time consuming task. From designing the graphics to finding something to write, from configuring the forum to moderating the submissions, from contacting the sponsors to shipping the prizes. It's almost a full time 2-3 weeks unpaid job. It is clear to me that we need to automate some of the mechanics if we want to keep this thing going.

I will start a thread soon about DT future, I hope you'll be willing to participate.

Very refreshing DTA, big thanks for matt3o for running this.

Congratulations to all the winners!

If you need someone at Cherry to ship the Wingnut to, let me know. I am sure they will post it on their social media ;)

Congratulations to all the winners; well deserved! And thanks to Matt3o for organising the event :) .

As for Cherry; wouldn't it be kind of ironic for them to post about? xD

Pretty easily spun: emphasise the Cherry part, and hand wave over the fact they don’t make them like that any more. Something like “Keyboard community raves over CHERRY products even when they are are 30 years old! Mechanical keyboards last a lifetime, invest in your heirloom keyboards with us today!” Then you go and buy some lousy backlit tchotchke that’ll shine through in 3-2-1…

And of course a big thanks to you too, Webwit, for kicking it all off in the first place!

@hansichen: I’m no Cherry specialist, so that’s news to me. What markets, and who makes these caps? Are they buying from GMK? Are they any good?

In all my life I have never won anything in a random drawing until this year, both times being something keyboard related!

Congrats to all the winners and thanks to matt3o for organizing this. It was an honor to be nominated for something in just my first year here.

Also a special thanks to the Keyboard Company, four prizes this year, and they have been sponsor in all eight Deskthority Awards since 2011!
