Many of us have wondered about Keyboardjoy's true identity, it appears now we have an answer.

Deskthority's domain is registered under the entity "OneCommerce Services UK Ltd"

Good evening everyone,

Please excuse the delay in responding to all of your comments, do allow me to first introduce myself.

I came across this forum serendipitously when seeking advice about how to adapt my keyboard to make it more personable for my office, which had banned it for making too much noise. The keyboard is an absolute delight. My background in this hobby pales in comparison to the likes of webwit and matt3o and I am doing my utmost to fully catch up and delve deep into this space.

Years back I was a moderator for a couple of pretty niche forums (one was fountain pens, but I digress)... and when I came across Deskthority I was impressed by the quality of this community. I then noticed that DT was seeking a new owner, I was intrigued and reached out to the admins.

My motivations for buying DT are several.

The first is, I really enjoyed moderating forums in the past and I relish the opportunity to delve back in.

Secondly, the acquisition was to protect the integrity of the wiki. Throughout my career I have been involved in open source communities, in some I played a role in governance. I am still on the committee of a couple of major open source software foundations. I truly value the importance of communities, trust and having access to pooled knowledge resources.

Thirdly, this strikes me as an opportunity to preserve the community but also invest in its development, initially from an infrastructure point of view, which will be done delicately with full awareness of the importance of the preservation of the rich information that you have all built up over time. I believe there is room for growth and I'd like to use my experience to help develop more attention for the community, through deeper community engagement, and perhaps a crowd-sourced blog.

This isn't about pesky advertising or commercialisation. For me, the future lies in authenticity and trusted, open sourced information, and quality forums like DT are a testament to what can be achieved - a self-perpetuating community that produces excellence. I want to understand how to harbour and nurture a community like this.

Also, everyone needs a hobby... keyboards are relatively new to me and I am excited to be able to combine my new interest with working with you to help sustain and develop this community.

Perhaps this post won't satisfy some - with a low post count, generic username and a new account, I almost feel like an intruder. I have discussed this carefully with webwit and he is still there, standing behind me to help direct what this new relationship with the community may look like.

This is new to me too and I'm going to rely on you to help guide me, and I hope you may be receptive to some of my new ideas. A user-generated blog is on my list, perhaps some of you may wish to contribute.

As for me personally, I'm in my mid-20s, currently based in London but hail from Scotland. I come from a tech background and was brought up to love computers and all things associated by my father, who is himself a computer scientist and mechanical keyboard enthusiast.

It's getting late here but I'll be in touch and will do my best to address your individual comments.

As for now, I'm going to wish everyone a very pleasant evening!
Hmm you seemed to have left out a few details looks like. I never saw "Hi I'm the Chief Marketing Officer of OneCommerce." It appears webwit didn't do his research or he doesn't care.

Considering you own the site now and you purposefully left out the corporate nature of the acquisition, I can't say I'm optimistic about it's future. I don't see anything about "open-sourced information" on the page here: https://www.onecommerce.group/sell/

Deskthority and all of it's members have become a product/asset to be profited from. Why else would a company such as this purchase it. I'm not sure what exactly that means for the future, but I can't see the site continuing without some sort of profiteering/marketing occurring in the near future. Either they will be selling data, inserting ads, or something else.

Hi All,

Deskthority was acquired by OneCommerce with the purpose of growing its community and facilitating the growth of the platform.
Indeed, the domain name was registered in order to use OneCommerce for Mechanical Keyboards. As a Startup, it is fair to say that the acquisition of Deskthority had a profitable purpose, nevertheless, no ads or commercialisation initiatives are ran on this website for revenue generation purposes.

Having said that, Oliver's idea of growing this community emerged from his own research and interest, and that is truly the aim Deskthority, in fact its purpose remains the same: growing and engaging a dynamic community of Mechanical Keyboard lovers and fans. We aim to grow and fulfil this community moving forward, by sharing relevant content and encouraging community building, and we hope that you will be part of this journey.

So what if the new owner is part of a company that acquires digital assets. He put money into DT when acquiring it and would be out of his mind to go against its users wishes unless his companies goals involve pissing away funds.

Give the guy a chance, he obviously lacks experience in leading communities, but I seriously doubt he's as evil as a lot of you are implying.

Hi Oliver,

I think it's fair to say that we all feel a bit duped. The way you presented yourself in your intro was as a somewhat new enthusiast, who was personally interested in the site. Now that it's become clear that Deskthority has been bought by a commercial entity and the forum was bought for a "profitable purpose", how is the community to trust that you have our best interests at heart? If you plan to make profit from this site without running ads or any commercialisation, are we to assume that you plan to grow the site and then sell it to another buyer for a profit?

He lied, no beating around it. "Personal interest" my ass, this was purely motivated by money. I think easy's take on why we have daddy's boy at the helm makes the most sense. Unless you want to watch this site turn into the Digg redesign, I suggest we all jump ship now.

I have zero intention of contributing to this site only to add to some company's profit margins. You can say whatever marketing jargon you want about "engaging a dynamic community" and "encouraging community building" but wouldn't be for the community or the site's members, the end goal would be lining your own pockets, which isn't something I have a vested interest in.

The only mistake is wasting more time here, webwit sold us out. There's no question it's money-oriented, that's literally the startup's purpose. It's not even one guy, it's a company. You notice how in their message they stated it wasn't even oliver typing out the message.

Exactly. And now a corporate entity that is dedicated to that mindset owns the forum. If my theory about how these schmucks will make a profit is correct, then hilariously, Deskthority itself is being flipped.
