Dead key not working US International Layout on a Mac + Ergodox

Asking a quick question for a co-worker here. They are using an Ergodox-ez (QMK firmware) with the recommended Ergodox layout by the company. They use the US International Layout on a Mac and can't seem to get the "dead key" symbols/letters to print. Any ideas that would help would be appreciated. I am not sure if they will have to switch the firmware layout or software layout.

Dead keys work like this on the Mac. Hold Option and they become active:

There’s nothing the keyboard knows here. No state besides “Alt” being held down. Should be a piece of cake. Unless the ergodox is programmed with contrary opinions of its own.

I know that Option kind of acts like an Alt+Gr on a normal us layout, but the international layout works differently. It is an actual dead key where you press the "~" and it highlights the character and waits for next key input so if you type "n" it will create an "ñ".

Looks like you still need to press Option to make a dead key active:

Or indeed Shift + Option in that dead key rich international English layout.

A few years ago, Apple also added the iOS derived ability to pick diacriticals by holding the key in question. So hold n to bring up a menu containing ñ and hit the desired number.
