I cleaned it up but don't see how to reattach the spacebar properly so that the metal stabilizer goes back into the little clips on the spacebar. Do I need to take off the metal plate and expose all the paddle switches in order to do it?
Generally, yes, one should take apart the keyboard to hook the spacebar stabilizer back in, although people have also devised a method which involves drilling into the spacebar's barrel and using dental floss to hook the stabilizer into the tabs on the spacebar (the video is done on an AT model F but the method should apply the same)

Also, it has a feature that I haven't seen before, little plastic squarish rings that go over some of the keycaps, like tab, shift, and enter. Is this an aftermarket thing or did they come this way? They seem to have been attached with rubber cement, but that has long since degraded.
Interesting. I'd like to see what that looks like.

Yes you have to take it apart to reinstall the space bar.

Hi,

Re-attaching the spacebar is not as scary as it seems! You don't need to bother with hooking the flipper to keep it in place - just use a blunt knife to keep it in its track while you lower the backplate. As for opening the assembly, you can use s pair of pliers to bend back the metal tab that's crimped over the backplate. On the AT, there may be another tab at the other side that's also crimped over. You can use hand pressure to reassemble the plates, with gentle taps of a hammer and assistance with a bar clamp. The REAL bitch is foam replacements - I just gave up doing it with XTs.

Quality spam post.
Don't reply to them: report! I'm tempted to report your post too!

Honestly though: it's just a button. Right there. Just for this purpose.

Edit: Actually, well noticed, I didn't realise it was a sneaky late edit. Great spot!

Note the dates: this was several posts further back in the thread. Actually: the OP! And the spammer came back to edit in their payload after several days. Bastard.

Bet there's more of these lurking in old threads now. I just did a forum search for "cigarette" and didn't find any more similar to this one. But dumb repetitiveness may well be the way we can beat these spammers. Whenever we spot something, look for earlier incidents!

Edit2: Ha! Here's the original thread they simply cloned.
