Macally slim modifiers with home row keys

My Mac's keyboard recently died after over a decade of service. Desperate for a compatible replacement, I bought an inexpensive Macally Compact USB Wired Keyboard for Mac and PC (SLIMKEYC, https://us.macally.com/products/slimkeyc) to use while I research a nicer replacement.

The SLIMKEYC works except for one thing: the modifiers Ctrl and Cmd don't work with home row alphabetic keys. They work with all other alphabetic keys, but I've used MacOS Keyboard Viewer to verify that they don't send anything when held with the home row keys. I'm an Emacs user, and living without those keys is hard.

Does anyone know how to fix this on this keyboard?

(What I would really like is the Space Cadet-style I used on Symbolics Lisp Machines decades ago, but that's probably too much trouble to make compatible with my Mac.)

No clue, the board is probably faulty.

As a mac user, there are few nicer authentic options than a restored AEK, especially if you're an ANSI user and you can get an SKCM orange M0115.
