Question about IBM Model M spacebar spring (picture inside)

I've just finished performing a bolt mod on my IBM Model M (1391401) and it works great!

However, I think I accidentally placed a spring in the hole to the left of the spacebar. (I purchased extra springs so I had a few extras)

Here is the picture:

What is supposed to be in that left hole? I don't think I'm missing any spacers (ie. under certain keys) so is that hole just supposed to be left empty?

If the spring doesn't belong, I suppose I can just rip it out from the top, right? (I definitely don't want to undo the bolts again!)

Nothing is meant to be in that barrel. You could probably just twist the spring anti-clockwise to remove it safely. Don't worry!

That worked. Thanks so much!

Some Ms came with split spacebars, like one of these

On the topic of split spacebars, does anyone know if Unicomp still makes them?
