Not very exciting, but since I was obliged to record my new Tactile Pro alongside my hybrid blue AT102W, I included a selection of other keyboards around the office for comparison purposes, since my camera is only capable of 22 kHz 4 bit audio. The camera was sat on two blocks of foam next to the keyboard to reduce vibration pickup, and all the desks I used had the computer turned off. (The Quiet Pro was too hard to remove from its location on another desk, and I couldn't be bothered to move the Cherry; the rest were all recorded on the same desk. The Dell L100 was rested against a Cisco 877 as the stupid thing just slid across the desk when I tried to type on it — pathetic rubbish.)
  1. Matias Tactile Pro — Matias click
  2. Dell AT102W (hybrid blues) — hybrid SKCM blue/black
  3. Matias Quiet Pro — Matias quiet click
  4. Dell L100 — rubber sheet
  5. Trust KB-1450 — scissor
  6. Filco Majestouch FKBN105M/UKB — Cherry MX brown
  7. KBC Poker II.wav — Cherry MX red
  8. Cherry G80-3000LQCDE/02 — Cherry MX clear
  9. AT102W vs Tactile Pro
All recordings are in the public domain, and left as WAV files. The recordings aren't too bad, although the clear, high tone of the hybrid blues is lost in the recording, which is why I'm not making too much of an effort over them.

Swapping keycaps between the Matias and Dell made very little difference.

It might be the type of desk — I noticed that the desk the G80-3000 is on is quite bendy.

Nice work Daniel ! :o

I confirm from my tests that the Matias quiet are really quiet because of the landing and "uping" pads in this design.

To have a G80-3000 too, it's a loud keyboard even with PBT caps : the plastic case should act like a resonance chamber. It's not fair to compare since plate-mounted (sandwitched) boards are quieter with the same switch.
It doesn't give justice to MX Clear but it's a great overview to hear how typing on different board gives you so different sounds :)

Why is anything unfair? I specifically recorded that keyboard to compare PCB mount with plate mount.

Nice. I'd like to do some myself actually. With the Libertouch, Olivetti and maybe an old Topre board vs new. What software are you using to record?

I'm not. I just hold OK on my camera as I power it up: this puts it into dictaphone mode. I used Audacity to trim all the leading and trailing silence/noise. I have no idea whether my camera implements AGC; if it does, it's not excessive, as the resulting levels seem close enough to the mark.

Oh right, duh...thanks for the tip with Audacity at least.
I'll be using my microphone as it would surely be better than my camera's.

What I was trying to say is that it's not accurate to compare the noise of MX Clear on a G80 between any other switch mounted on a plate. Sorry to have expressed myself so badly  In your intention, it works greatly : We can clearly ear the difference between PCB mounted and plate mounted switches. I'm sure it will help people to figure out what sort of keyboard to chose :)

I love a good sequence of recordings of real typing. Here's some of mine if you want them, same deal: do whatever you want with the files, without limit. All these were recorded with the same microphone, level (no auto levelling!) and placement on my desk. So they're all directly comparable.

I'll get back to the NovaTouch again now I've some silencing rings on it. But the authentic typing recording will have to wait on Cookie making more of them. I've also got an HHKB Type-S of my own on its way, which will be informative as well as my most likely daily typer. And my beam springs need some attention and capture eventually too, with and without solenoid.
